20:00 Race Across the World Series 6: Episode 7
The teams tackle freezing conditions as they race to Kharkhorin, Mongolia.
In the penultimate leg, the race shifts up a gear as the four remaining teams enter their eighth and final country, Mongolia. Facing freezing temperatures and rugged off-road travel, the intrepid duos set out on an expedition across the endless steppe and deep into the unknown, traversing landscapes few travellers have ever experienced. It tests every ounce of their resilience as they battle to take pole position at the final checkpoint before the finish line. Racing from Ulgii in the west of Mongolia, the teams must travel 1,550km to reach Kharkhorin, the former capital of the Mongol Empire under Chinggis Khan’s third son, Ögödei Khan. In a country where public transport is scarce, the teams face a crucial decision. Two main highways connect the west to the east; deciding which one to target could shape their entire race. Whichever path they choose, parts of the journey will take them off-road, relying on local car shares, taxis, and hitchhiking to make progress. But in a country where every car is a potential lift, drivers expect payment, and with fuel costs rising, negotiation is the key to success. As they travel across the vast country, all four teams are embraced by the local communities they pass through, welcoming the pairs into their homes, traditional gers, to take shelter from the harsh conditions outside. Best friends Jo and Kush spend the night in a family's ger, where they discover the unusual fuel used to keep it warm in sub-zero conditions. Taken to a local community hall, they meet a traditional Mongolian throat singer who sparks important memories for Kush. Katie and Harrison also get the chance to sample Mongolian nightlife, dancing the night away at a local disco. Along the way, after stopping to replenish their budget, Harrison opens up and the siblings have an important conversation about their relationship. Father-and-daughter duo Molly and Andrew help at a nomadic encampment, mucking in with the daily routine. For geography teacher Andrew, it’s an experience that fulfils a lifelong dream. Meanwhile, Mark and Margo get a taste of a more modern side of ger life, staying with a family of teachers on the outskirts of Myangad and sampling suutei tsai, Mongolia’s famous salty tea. As the teams race across the icy steppe towards Kharkhorin, they battle the unpredictability of transport in Mongolia, where any delay could prove costly. With £20,000 at stake, everyone is fighting to take the lead at this crucial stage of their Race Across the World.

19:00 Iolo's River Valleys Series 2: 2. Tywi R
Iolo explores the Tywi, spotting fallow deer, rare woodland birds and juvenile salmon.
Iolo heads up the Tywi river valley. His 75-mile journey begins at the coastal village of Llansteffan, where the river meets the sea under the watchful gaze of its 12th century Norman castle. Along the area of dune between the beach and the village, Iolo encounters a stonechat, a small, hardy bird that vigorously defends its territory with a call like two stones clicking together. The Tywi suffers from water quality issues like most UK rivers, and Iolo stops to observe a significant algae bloom along the banks near Carmarthen, a direct result of excessive nutrients from sewage water and agricultural runoff that threaten the river's delicate ecosystem. Following the river inland through the fertile lowlands, Iolo visits Bishop's Pond, by Abergwili. This tranquil oxbow lake, once part of the main river, is now a thriving wetland. Here, Iolo delights in the vibrant colours of damselflies and dragonflies patrolling the water's edge. A major highlight of the journey occurs at Dinefwr Park near Llandeilo, where Iolo heads into the parkland during the autumn for the fallow deer rutting season. He is treated to a spectacular view of a dominant buck as it uses his deep, belching groans to hold his group of does together. Above the valley floor, Iolo meets a drystone waller rebuilding a section of wall dating back to the 1700s at Taliaris. On the opposite side of the valley, Iolo visits Garn Goch, a huge iron age hillfort, and sees birds that have disappeared from most of the Welsh countryside. Moving further upstream to a quiet tributary, the River Sawdde, Iolo meets officers from Natural Resources Wales surveying the river, and discovers a glimmer of hope for the catchment's future: a healthy population of juvenile salmon and other fish species amongst the oxygen-rich gravels. The adventure continues into the heart of the Cambrian mountains at the RSPB Gwenffrwd-Dinas reserve. In this enchanting ancient oak woodland, Iolo gently holds a cockchafers beetle, also known as a maybug, in his hands. This large beetle has become scarce in recent years, and is a three course meal for bats. He also finds a wood warbler, a speciality of these temperate Welsh rainforests, whose shivering song is amazing to hear. As the river narrows and the landscape becomes even more rugged, Iolo enters the vast Tywi forest. The journey concludes near the river's remote source in the Cambrian mountains, a landscape where the Tywi begins its life as a tiny stream. Here, Iolo reflects on a journey rich in history as it is in natural wonder.

01:30 MasterChef Series 22: Episode 7 R [AD]
Six new amateur cooks leave their home kitchens to compete for a MasterChef apron.
Heat 3 is upon us, which means one thing: six exciting new amateur cooks have left their home kitchens ready to compete for one of four coveted MasterChef aprons. The lucky few who succeed have one more hurdle to jump for a place in this week’s quarter-final. The creative competitors include a musician, an artist and an actor. However, a place in the next round rests on one thing only: the culinary skill that only a MasterChef champion possesses. Anna and Grace kick things off in style with the signature dish round. This is all about one dish that showcases what these amateurs are made of. What would they serve to impress friends or family? Given the standard of food in the competition so far, these dishes need to be tip-top in every sense, reveal ample skill and be bursting with flavour. The two dishes that taste as good as they look and give the others a run for their money will earn those cooks an apron and their ticket into the next round. It’s not game over for the other four, but they need to regain their composure sharpish for their next task: the classic recipe test. This is all about whether the amateurs can navigate their way around a recipe, which is an authentic salade niçoise. This might sound simple, but they only have 45 minutes to bring together multiple elements, including seared tuna, potatoes, olives, anchovies, a soft-boiled egg and a perfectly balanced mustard dressing. All the ingredients are laid out for them, but they need culinary intuition and some expert timing to impress. Anna and Grace pick their favourites, and the two best cooks claim the last of the aprons on offer. The four still standing head into the heat finale, where it soon becomes clear whether their success so far has been down to luck as they cook their best two courses for Anna, Grace and three special guests. This time, 2016 MasterChef champion, Jane Devonshire, 2017 champ, Dr Saliha Mahmood Ahmed, and 2020’s winner, Thomas Frake, take their place in the dining room ready to taste the amateurs’ dishes. All three are willing the cooks to deliver, but they also know from experience that even the best cooks sometimes fall by the wayside. Having tasted the competitors' food and considered the skill and technique on offer, the judges, armed with the diners’ feedback, make their final decision. With only three places in the quarter-final up for grabs, one more cook says their goodbyes as the hunt for this year’s champion continues.

15:45 The Repair Shop on the Road Series 1: Glasgow - A Fix at the Top of the Cathedral R
Dom and Lucia help an iconic Glasgow landmark that has lost its lustre.
In this episode, the experts lend their skills to a community project, hear the story behind a new treasure to be repaired and visit a local crafting hero. Dom and Lucia are in Scotland’s biggest city for one of their biggest, or at least highest, fixes yet. Roof works mean once-in-a-generation access to Glasgow Cathedral’s weathervane, so the pair are helping blacksmith Stacey and apprentice Jameel clean and re-gild this iconic cockerel. The medieval building has a storied history, but it definitely predates lifts, so Lucia volunteers to go boldly where no Repair Shop expert has gone before – straight to the top of the 225-foot-high spire. Back on solid ground, Kaming, a member of Glasgow’s Hakka Chinese community, has a Chinese unicorn head he hopes Lucia can bring back to life. The fragile bamboo-and-paper mask plays an important part in celebrations and festivities, but years of vigorous dancing have left it tattered and torn, its once-proud horn now held on with sticky tape. As he is the last person, as far as he is aware, who still knows how to do the traditional dance associated with the mask, he hopes having the costume repaired will mean he’s able to teach it to future generations before it's lost forever. It’s not a simple fix though, as Lucia has to contend with unfamiliar materials and balance her artistic restoration with creating a mask that will stand up structurally to years' more use in the future. As they travel the country, the Repair Shop experts love to meet fellow craftspeople, but it’s not all stonemasonry and pottery. There’s been a vibrant graffiti scene in Glasgow for decades, and Dom is meeting celebrated street artist Pizzaboy to discover how his large-scale works engage with the local community.

20:00 MasterChef Series 22: Episode 11
A brand new set of hopeful amateur chefs enter the kitchen for the last round of heats.
The last heat of this year’s competition has arrived, and the final group of six amateurs have been patiently waiting for their shot at culinary stardom. As always, four MasterChef aprons are up for grabs, and Anna and Grace will be putting them through their paces across two tasks. In this round, the hopefuls include two teachers, a pub manager and a civil servant, who all have one thing in common: an insatiable appetite for cooking. The signature dish round kicks off proceedings, with Anna and Grace hoping to sample a dish that represents the amateurs down to a tee. The standard in the 2026 competition is through the roof, so to earn one of the two aprons on offer this round, the amateurs must show that they are not afraid to push themselves. The judges’ favourite pair will sail through to the next round, leaving the other four to prepare for their final chance. Securing one of the last two aprons in this year’s competition won’t be easy, as the remaining four will be taking on Anna and Grace’s classic recipe test. This time round, the judges would like them to prepare gnocchi with a Tuscan-style sauce, sun-blushed tomatoes and spinach. The issue is that they won’t have access to any measurements or methods. They just have the basic recipe and only 45 minutes to complete the task. Light and delicate gnocchi that is cooked to perfection and a sauce singing with Mediterranean flavours might not be as easy as it sounds. Culinary instincts will need to kick in... fast! It might come down to small margins, but Anna and Grace can only choose two competitors to progress in the competition, meaning two will come to the end of their MasterChef journey. Next, the four cooks left standing need to prove there’s more in the tank as they fight to keep hold of their place in the competition. The judges have invited three familiar faces to taste the amateur’s dishes: 2006 finalist Dean Edwards, 2012 champion, Shelina Permalloo, and 2024 champion, Brin Parathapan. All three know the drill and are expecting food that is imaginative as well as tasty, but will the amateurs be able to deliver two courses in just one hour and 15 minutes? This is next-level pressure, and the stakes are higher than ever. With the diners' verdict in hand, Anna and Grace will ultimately choose which cooks have MasterChef potential and deserve to stick around in the race to become this year’s champion.

In Porthcawl, on the south west coast of Wales, the crew receive a call about a swimmer who’s been swept out to sea in a rip current - as his wife and son watch on helplessly from the beach. On the Cornish coast, the Sennen Cove and Penlee crews respond to reports of a 31,000-ton cargo ship that’s about to run aground on the Wolf Rock lighthouse, ten miles from Land’s End. On the east coast of Scotland, the strong offshore winds at North Berwick cause the crew to be called out to two shouts in quick succession. And on the Thames, the Chiswick crew race to the rescue of a party boat that has lost engine power - and is now drifting dangerously upriver.

00:40 MasterChef Series 22: Episode 8 R [AD]
It's heat two, and six more home cooks put themselves in the culinary spotlight.
It’s time for the second heat of the week, with six more home cooks putting themselves in the culinary spotlight, ready to show judges Anna Haugh and Grace Dent that they have what it takes to take this year’s title. All will be vying for the right to wear a MasterChef apron, but only the best three on the night will live to fight another day and head into the week’s quarter-final. Amongst those hoping for success are a GP receptionist, an aviation executive and a builder. Anna and Grace waste no time in getting the competition started with the Signature Dish round. This is the dish that the contestants go to when they are out to impress. The judges want to see personality flood the plates and get some indication that these cooks know how to pack a punch with flavour. Global influences are in abundance and include Polish, Mexican and Brazilian flavours, which should make for an exciting tasting. The best two cooks will win the first two aprons of the night. The other four cooks will have one more shot to trade in their aprons from home, but they will only have a fifty-fifty chance of success, as two will be out of the competition. Grace and Anna have set a daunting Classic Recipe test, which requires the cooks to follow a recipe for an egg yolk and ricotta-filled raviolo, served with a sage and mushroom burnt butter. The judges have been kind enough to provide them with ready-made pasta dough but not so kind as to include measurements or timings in the recipe. It will take a decent amount of skill and technique to deliver thin pasta with a nicely seasoned filling and oozy yolk in just 45 minutes. The two pasta dishes that fail to excite the judges will send their cooks packing, leaving two more in with a chance at becoming quarter-finalists. Next, the four apron winners face an even tougher challenge. Anna and Grace have invited three guests to taste the two best courses these amateurs can create in just 75 minutes. The guests are former 2010 champion Dhruv Baker, 2013 champ Natalie Coleman and 2022 finalist Pookie Tredell. All three diners will have one thing on their mind: the desire to taste the food of a future MasterChef champion. The amateurs will need to throw everything they have in the tank at this, as it’s a tall order in normal circumstances, never mind under this kind of pressure. Food that has technique, skill, and an abundance of flavour that excites both the diners and judges will be required to succeed. All that’s left is for Anna and Grace to pick three cooks who have shown enough potential to head into this week’s quarter-final. One more cook will be back in their home kitchen before they know it, with their MasterChef dream already over.

20:00 MasterChef Series 22: Episode 12
It’s time for six cooks to dig deep in the last quarter-final of the competition.
It’s time for the week’s six best cooks to dig deep and deliver in the last quarter-final of the competition. Their next goal is a place in knockout week, but there are two more challenges to overcome before that can happen. The judges want to see them thrive in both tasks to feel confident that they can cope with what comes next. Knockout week is as brutal as it sounds. First up, it’s the invention test, but with a fresh twist. Grace and Anna want one plate of food that features an ingredient sure to test their skills: fruit. To aid them, the MasterChef market has opened its doors and been replenished with a bounty of some of the world’s greatest produce, including mangoes, clementines, pears and pineapples – you name it, they have it! The amateurs’ dishes can be sweet or savoury, but the fruit element must be the star of the show, elevated and complemented by whatever else they choose to put on the plate. If the contestants can think on their feet and deliver a cohesive plate with flair and technique, they might be on to a winner! Next, Anna and Grace have one more challenge for all six cooks. This time round, they have called on top restaurant critic Leyla Kazim to set the brief. Leyla would like the amateurs to create an outstanding dish showcasing an ingredient they really used to dislike when they were kids. The cooks must tap into old, perhaps emotive, memories and show they can now give that ingredient the love and respect it deserves. Having proven they have conquered their childhood fears (or not!), Anna and Grace will deliver their final verdict. Which cooks do they think can cope with the pressure of knockout week? Only the best will be selected to move forward and compete for the title of MasterChef champion.

It’s the third quarter-final, and six cooks return to prove they have what it takes.
The week closes with the third quarter-final as the six best cooks of the week return to prove they have the nerve and skill to go even further. To get to knockout week, they need to impress across two more challenges, leaving Anna and Grace with a tough final decision. Only the best will live to fight another day and remain in the race to become MasterChef Champion 2026. Proceedings open with a true test of the amateur’s mettle as they face their first invention test, using their imaginations to serve up their best brunch dish. This is not a time for a limp sausage bap. To help them create this brunch masterpiece, the MasterChef Market is back open for business and includes every type of meat, fish, vegetable, fruit and spice they could hope for. Whether they can think on their feet and deliver a skilful plate at speed remains to be seen, but whatever they choose needs to wow the judges. Nobody will depart after the cooks’ brunches have been dissected and digested, but a poor brunch won’t win any favours from the judges. One more challenge will determine which cooks become quarter-finalists. Grace and Anna have invited esteemed restaurant critic Jimi Famurewa to the MasterChef HQ, who brings a challenging brief for the cooks. Jimi loves to see variety and culture in the dishes he's presented. With nuts being a key ingredient in the Nigerian culture Jimi grew up with, he would like the contestants to prepare a dish that showcases a nut or nuts of their choice. A versatile ingredient should allow the cooks free rein to go completely – you guessed it – nuts with ideas! The cooks can roast them to make brittles, pound them into flour, use them as a base for a sauce, but whatever they do needs to highlight that distinct flavour, deliver a great balanced dish and showcase spot-on technique. With Jimi’s feedback noted, Anna and Grace must decide the best cooks of the day and send them into knockout week, where the stakes are higher then ever!

11:30 Flaming Feasts Series 2: 6. Ynys Mon R
Salt, smoke, prawns and unique lamb – Chris explores Anglesey’s bold island flavours.
Chris travels to Anglesey for an episode defined by salt, sea, smoke and bold local innovation. He begins at Halen Môn, meeting founder Alison and daughter Jess to explore how a centuries-old salt-making tradition has evolved into a world-class craft. Among their creations, Chris discovers oak-smoked water, a pure, natural ingredient made with only water and sustainable smoke. He bags a bottle of this ‘liquid fire’ to incorporate into a cookout later in the episode. Next, Chris heads to the coast to join a one-man-band fisherman keeping the tradition of catching native Welsh prawns alive. These sweet, delicate prawns, harvested just off the Anglesey shoreline, are transformed by Chris into a classic Chinese takeaway favourite: crispy prawn toast with a homemade sweet-and-sour chilli sauce. Chris also visits Felin Honey Bees, meeting local beekeeper Katie. Inspired by the golden freshly harvested honey, he prepares a honey cake that celebrates the sweetness and craftsmanship the bees bring to this corner of the island. The journey continues at Catch 22 in Valley, run by Anglesey chef Neil and his wife Mel. Here, Chris encounters a rare discovery: fat-tailed lamb with rich, deep flavour. Originally from Namibia, this breed is a surprising find on the island, sparking questions about who raises them and why Anglesey is now home to such a unique flock. That curiosity leads Chris inland to Damara Môn, where farmer Peter Williams is running one of Wales’s most ambitious livestock projects. On his smallholding in Llangristiolus, Peter raises the UK’s first flock of Damara lambs – a hardy, self-shedding breed he first encountered decades ago in the Middle East. Chris spends time on the farm, meeting the animals and learning about Peter’s bold venture, before choosing a whole Damara lamb for a special cook. That cook takes place in Menai Bridge, where Chris takes over the island’s most beloved kebab shop for a one-off feast. Assisted by his Turkish friends, he slow-roasts the lamb on a traditional doner spit. The kebab is served alongside fresh salad leaves sourced from local grower Llysiau Menai. The shop opens to the public on a first-come, first-served basis for a special lunch service. The result is an Anglesey journey that brings together tradition and innovation, sea and soil, heritage and daring new ideas – all united by fire, community and the island’s extraordinary flavours.

Live coverage of the 2025/26 FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City.
Live coverage of the 2025/26 FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City from Wembley Stadium. Manchester City are the first club in history to reach the final four years in a row, but they were beaten by Manchester United in 2024 and by Crystal Palace in 2025. Under Pep Guardiola, they’ve lifted the famous old trophy on two occasions, in 2019 and 2023. Chelsea’s last FA Cup win came in 2018 when they beat Manchester United. It’s been a turbulent season for the club, with managers Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior both being sacked, so the FA Cup represents a last shot at silverware. Manchester City are chasing a Wembley double having already claimed the League Cup this season. These two teams have won the FA Cup 15 times between them, but they’ve never faced each other in a FA Cup Final.

01:45 Children of the Blitz R [AD][W]
Some of the last survivors of the Blitz, children who weren't evacuated, tell their story.
From September 1940 to May 1941, during the Second World War, over 35,000 tonnes of bombs and incendiaries were dropped on towns and cities across the UK during the infamous Luftwaffe aerial bombing campaign that became known as the Blitz. Just before the outbreak of war, the British government’s Operation Pied Piper put plans in place to evacuate millions of children, but only 800,000 left towns and cities that were vulnerable to attack. These are the stories of some of the two million children who stayed at home, often to help their families or because their parents couldn’t bear to send them away. This documentary features some of the last people who witnessed the reality of the Blitz, with their testimony offering an intimate, enlightening and moving portrait of wartime Britain through children’s eyes.

15:45 The Repair Shop on the Road Series 1: East Lothian - Saving the Musselburgh Carriage R
The experts race against time to restore a historic carriage before a town procession.
In this episode, the experts lend their skills to a community project, hear the story behind a new treasure to be repaired and visit a local crafting hero. Will and Kirsten are in Musselburgh, on Scotland’s east coast. It’s a town boasting a proud heritage that is celebrated each year with a procession led by their elected Honest Lad and Honest Lass. However, for the past few years, the antique carriage these local luminaries ride in has been off the road. Restoring the carriage is a huge job that requires the skills of local signwriter Ross Hastie and wheelwright Greg Rowland, and made more complicated by the impending deadline of this year’s festival. It's a bit of a musical mystery when the team are faced with Erica’s Stroviol. In the family since the 1930s, it belonged to Erica's father, who was a passionate musician who played in several local groups. The distinctive horn has become detached from this turn-of-the-century musical oddity, so it might take more than just the skills of stringed instrument expert Becky Houghton to get a tune out of it once again. In nearby Edinburgh, Will stops off at Stewart Christie & Co, Scotland’s oldest bespoke tailors, to discover how their handmade tweed clothes balance modern demands with century-old techniques. Will gets an insight into every step of the process, from an initial measuring to getting on the scissors himself and cutting out his own waistcoat pattern from the tweed cloth the company built their name on.

20:30 The Smuggling Business: Undercover
An undercover BBC investigation exposing the people-smuggling gangs operating from France.
Over the past two years, tens of thousands of migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats from northern France, despite repeated promises by successive governments to stop the trade. This undercover BBC investigation reveals how people smuggling gangs are operating in plain sight inside a migrant camp in Dunkirk. It exposes a highly organised criminal marketplace driven by fierce competition between rival groups, who enforce control over the settlements through fear, violence and intimidation. The film examines efforts by UK authorities to disrupt and dismantle the criminal networks profiting from the crossings, and questions whether those measures are keeping pace with the scale and sophistication of the operation. BBC investigative reporter Josie Hannett also travels to Crowborough, where opposition to a new asylum seeker accommodation site has turned the town into a flashpoint in the national immigration debate. She asks whether current government policy is likely to deter future arrivals, or whether the UK is preparing for a future that will require many more such sites across the south east

15:30 Wonders of Life Original Series: 1. What Is Life? R [AD][S]
Professor Brian Cox journeys to south east Asia to understand how life first began.
Brian Cox visits south east Asia's 'Ring of Fire'. In the world's most volcanic region, he explores the thin line that separates the living from the dead and poses that most enduring of questions: what is life? The traditional answer is one that invokes the supernatural, as seen at the annual Day of the Dead celebrations in the Philippine highlands. Brian sets out to offer an alternative answer: one bound up in the flow of energy through the universe. On the edge of Taal Volcano lake, Brian demonstrates how the first spark of life may have arisen. Here, heat energy from the inner earth forces its way to the surface and changes its chemistry, just as it did in our planet's infancy. It is now believed that these chemical changes set up a source of energy from which life first emerged. Today, virtually all derives its energy from the sun. But there's a paradox to this, as according to the laws of physics, energy can neither be created nor destroyed. So life doesn't 'use' energy up. It can't remove it from the universe. So how does energy enable living things to live? Brian reveals life to be a conduit through which energy in the universe passes, just one part in a process that governs the life cycle of the entire universe. By diverting energy in the cosmos, living things are able to grow and thrive. But whilst the flow of energy can explain living things, it can't explain how life has endured for more than three billion years. So Brian meets an animal in the Borneo rainforest that holds the key to how life persists - the orangutan. Ninety-seven per cent of our DNA is shared with orangutans. That common heritage reveals a profound conclusion: that DNA is a record of the evolution of life on Earth, one that connects us to everything alive today and that has ever lived. So life isn't really a thing. It's a chemical process, a way of tapping into the energy flowing through the universe and transmitting it from generation to generation through the elegant chemistry of DNA. Far from demanding a mystical explanation, the emergence of life might be an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics.

15:30 Wonders of Life Original Series: 2. Expanding Universe R [AD][S]
Prof Brian Cox visits the USA to retell evolutionary history and the origin of the senses.
Amidst the rich natural history of the United States, Professor Brian Cox encounters the astonishing creatures that reveal how the senses evolved. Every animal on Earth experiences the world in a different way, using a unique suite of senses to detect its physical environment. Tracing the evolution of these mechanisms is a story that takes us through life's journey - from single-celled organisms to more complex, sentient beings. Brian finds that over the course of 3.8 billion years, the senses have driven life in new directions and may, ultimately, have led to our own curiosity and intelligence. Brian begins deep in the caves of Kentucky, where, devoid of light, he must orientate by sense of touch and sound alone. Yet even in this limited environment he encounters a creature that is perfectly able to find its way around. This is the paramecium, a microscopic single-celled organism. Despite their apparent simplicity, paramecia display a clear sense of touch, changing direction whenever they bump into something. Brian finds that the electrochemical process through which they 'feel' the world underlies practically all senses in all living things. Brian next explores the sense of taste in the muddy waters of the Mississippi Delta. With a metre-long catfish in his arms, Brian explains how its entire body is covered in taste buds. These behave like one giant tongue, allowing the catfish to build up a three-dimensional map of its otherwise murky surroundings. A scuba-dive off the coast of California brings Brian face to face with the strange yet remarkable mantis shrimp. These inhabitants of the ocean floor see the world through eyes made of 10,000 lenses, each with twice as many visual pigments as any other animal on Earth. But it's in the eyes of the octopus that Brian finds a link between the ability to process sensory data and the emergence of intelligence. This tantalising discovery may be evidence that humans evolved large brains in order to process the vast amounts of information gathered through our sense of vision. For Brian this raises an extraordinary prospect - that ultimately it was our senses that allowed us to gaze up at the vast expanse of the universe and begin to understand its origins.

00:40 Race Across the World Series 6: Episode 7 R

01:40 Iolo's River Valleys Series 2: 2.
