11:30 Flaming Feasts Series 2: 1. Aberteifi R
Chef Chris 'Flamebaster' Roberts dives into Cardigan’s wild west.
Chris heads to the wild west of Wales: Aberteifi, aka Cardigan – a coastal town where the River Teifi meets the sea. A place steeped in tradition, powered by producers and full of people cooking with purpose. He starts at Grain, formerly Pizza Tipi, a much-loved riverside spot founded by brothers Calder, Teifi and Jackson. After a bellyful of wood-fired pizza, Chris joins the bros and their mam and dad to celebrate one of Cardigan Bay’s most overlooked and underrated treasures – spider crab. On a hidden cove, they boil the crabs in seawater over driftwood flames, cracking shells and laughing through a messy, glorious feast as the sun sets over the bay. Next, Chris takes to the River Teifi with local fishing legend Len Walters for a crash course in one of Wales’s oldest – and wobbliest – traditions: coracle fishing for sewin, the highly prized Welsh sea trout. Under moonlight, they cast their nets from tiny round boats, hunting for the perfect fish to cook at dawn over open fire. But Cardigan isn’t just good times and great food. Beneath the surface, the town faces tough challenges – seasonal work, rural poverty and growing mental health struggles among its young people. At The Depot Café, Chris meets passionate chef Michelle Corrigan and young cook Viktoriia, a Ukrainian refugee who’s found hope and belonging through food. Together, they cook for the community and inspire Chris to carry that spirit into his final feast. In the hills above town, Owen and Tanya of Myrddin Heritage welcome Chris to their smallholding, a farm born from a dream to live simply and raise animals with respect. They’ve traded city life for mud, graft and a herd of slow-grown retired breeding sows. Their pork is bold and deep with flavour. Chris picks up a beautiful cut for the final cook. Of course, no perfect calzone is complete without cheese. At Caws Teifi Cheese, Wales’s oldest artisan cheesemaker, Chris samples delicious raw milk wheels and grabs the perfect melter for his feast. Back at Pizza Tipi, everything comes together. The pork is smoked low and slow, the cheese molten, and the huge wood oven is roaring. Chris and the brothers crank out Cardigan-inspired calzones, loaded with local flavour and heart, for a crowd of hungry locals.

16:15 Earth's Great Rivers Series 1: 3. Mississippi R
The surprising story of the Mississippi, a river that unites the USA.
It is an unexpected and contrasting journey through America's iconic and varied landscapes as the Mississippi flows from source to mouth. The Mississippi's greatest surprise is its incredible reach. Its fingers stretch into nearly half of the USA, collecting water from 31 states. More than any other, this one river has helped unite the many and varied parts of America. The Mississippi's longest tributary begins life in the depths of winter, in the towering Rocky Mountains of Wyoming and Montana. Billions of tonnes of water, ultimately destined to flow south are trapped as ice and snow. Here, its headwaters are a draw for the world's top ice climbers, who celebrate winter with daring climbs up towering frozen waterfalls - surely the most dangerous and spectacular winter faces of the ice-bound Mississippi. In this frozen wilderness, a handful of tenacious coyotes have learned to fish, in one remarkable Mississippi headwater kept flowing by the steaming geysers of Yellowstone National Park. In the bone-chilling water, the coyotes stand stock still for hours, risking severe hypothermia in the hope of pouncing on a fish. Spring in the Upper Mississippi in Minnesota, arrives on the wings of tens of thousands of white pelicans who bring the river to life. Both comical and beautiful, their crowded flotillas put on balletic, synchronised fishing displays. On the other side of the continent in crystal-clear Appalachian Mountain streams, some devious parents employ the creepiest childcare strategy on earth. Freshwater mussels produce bizarre growths which mimic small fish. These lifelike lures even have false eyes and dance, imitating real fish. Their purpose is to act as living bait, tricking larger predatory fish into attacking them. Once bitten, a cloud of blood-sucking baby mussels clamp onto the unwitting fish's gills. After several weeks of feeding on their victim's body fluids, they drop off and disperse. These sneaky mussels provide their babies with food and transport to different parts of the river. It is a macabre underwater puppet show, made all the more weird as the puppet master (the parent mussel) is blind and has no idea what a fish looks like. But the spring thaw also means extra work for busy beavers - safe in their cosy lodges all winter, they must now venture out to repair the damage that the rushing meltwater has done to their precious dams. As the river flows south through the central US, it becomes a vital transport link. Special cameras take us on a time-travelling journey down the busiest section of the river. A gigantic boat zooms hundreds of miles downriver in seconds, flashing through night and day. This is the industrial heart of the river. Even here, the river still hosts incredible wildlife spectacles. Each Independence Day, millions of mayflies gather in swarms so large they can be seen on weather radar. As it flows into the south, it spreads and slows, feeding the largest swamp in the US - the fertile, mysterious Atchafalaya. Over 2,000 square miles of wetlands, where alligators still rule. This is one of the richest and most diverse wilderness regions of the states, - a melting pot where racoons and beavers mix with tropical specialties like roseate spoonbills and emerald-green anole lizards. These back waters are the fabled spirit of the Mississippi made famous by Mark Twain and the Blues. As the massive river nears the ocean, it passes cities that have grown up along its banks - like New Orleans. Here 60 miles of docks make it the largest port in the western hemisphere where goods brought down the Mississippi are transferred to huge ocean going ships. At the end of its 3,500-mile journey, the Mississippi eventually creates one of the biggest river deltas on the planet. But today this delta is under threat. Damming and controls along the river's length are preventing the Mississippi's natural flood cycles - it can no longer replace land that the ocean washes away. This remarkable delta is home to millions of migrant birds and protects vast areas inland from hurricane surges. Its preservation is key to both the people and the wildlife here. The delta is a landscape built by the river from cornfields in Iowa, mountaisides in the Rockies and sediment from Tennessee streams - all collected and deposited by one huge river which unites and defines one great nation.

10:30 Pilgrimage The Road to the Scottish Isles: Episode 3 R [AD]
With the end of their pilgrimage looming, the celebrities get a taste of monastic life.
In this third and final episode, the pilgrims head north east to Moray on the edge of the Scottish Highlands. Their first stop is Pluscarden Abbey, Britain’s only working medieval monastery. Keen to see how these current-day Benedictine monks live and work, the pilgrims stay overnight and sample some of the routines of monastic life, which include helping with domestic duties. As they question the monks about their life choices, Monty, Louisa, Will and Nick fruit pick in the orchards, while Lawrence, Shazia and Scarlett start cooking dinner. But over supper, and after attending a service conducted in Latin, the group’s first proper argument erupts over a few misplaced words. By the following morning, all tensions are forgotten, and the pilgrims head off to Forres, a nearby ancient town dating back to around AD900. Louisa, Shazia, Scarlett and Will discover the Witches Stone, a memorial to so-called witches killed in the area during the Middle Ages. Meanwhile, Lawrence, Monty and Nick seek out Sueno’s Stone, a famous Christian Pictish monument thought to be evidence that, three centuries after Columba’s death, Christianity had reached the territory inhabited by pagan Picts. The pilgrims head west across the Highlands and catch a ferry to the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Lewis. In Stornoway, Shazia takes the chance to pray at Britain’s northern-most mosque, taking Nick and Louisa with her. After the service, they’re invited to stay for tea when they find out more about this small, friendly Muslim community. Once reunited with the other pilgrims, they head to the Calanais Stones, which are older than Stonehenge. While Lawrence ponders how Columba would have reacted to these pagan megaliths, Shazia shares that with any place of pilgrimage, its significance is not what it is, but the faith you have in it. The pilgrims then start heading back south on the Scottish mainland towards the Inner Hebrides. On the way, they stop off for a wet and wild walk in Glen Nevis in the shadow of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, and with Columba’s Isle now only two days away, their thoughts start turning to the end of their pilgrimage and their own personal spiritual journeys. Another ferry ride gets them to the Isle of Mull - just a hop away from Iona - and their last overnight stop, where they sit down together to celebrate their journey and Columba. Early the following morning, day 15 of their pilgrimage, local boatmen take them on the final leg of their pilgrimage, from Mull to the tiny island of Iona. The current abbey on Iona was founded in the 13th century over the foundations of Columba’s original 6th-century monastery, but it was Columba’s settlement which made Iona an island famed for its scholarship and culture. The pilgrims visit the shrine where it's most likely Columba was buried, and a last walk to the hill of Iona brings about an emotional farewell to their pilgrimage, with the final words belonging to Nick, who salutes the memory of Columba and his achievements.

16:35 Attenborough's Life in Colour Series 1: 1. Seeing in Colour R [AD]
David Attenborough reveals the extraordinary ways in which animals use colour.
The natural world is full of colours. For us, they are a source of beauty, but for animals they are a tool for survival. David Attenborough reveals the extraordinary ways in which animals use colour: to win a mate, to fight off rivals and to warn enemies. In India, peacocks dazzle females with magnificent tail feathers; a tiny hummingbird in the deserts of North America unfurls his spectacular headdress as he dances for a mate; and in the darkness of a rainforest, powerful mandrill baboons signal their status with red and blue face masks, while tiny frogs warn of deadly poisons with brilliant colours. New camera technologies - some developed especially for this series – also allow us to see colours and patterns usually invisible to human eyes. Ultraviolet cameras reveal bright signals on a butterfly’s wings and facial markings on yellow damselfish that are used as secret communication channels. Some animals can also detect polarised light, and specialist cameras can now show us how fiddler crabs see the world, and how mantis shrimp have strange polarisation patterns on their bodies to signal to a mate or rival.

First into the barn is Heather Evans from Winchester, who is hoping bike aficionado Tim Gunn will be able to restore balance to a tricky mode of transport. She presents a battered unicycle that was a gift she bought for her late husband, Perry, and it perfectly embodies his playful spirit and unquenchable thirst for life – all the more notable given the challenges he faced. On Perry’s second date with Heather, he told her he had HIV through infected blood products he had taken for his haemophilia and that he only had a few years to live. Perry fell seriously ill, but new drug treatments came along, and within a year, he was back at work, living life to the full and riding the unicycle that so perfectly sums up his sense of fun. Sadly, after 36 years of marriage, Perry passed away, and the family are desperate to get his beloved unicycle back up and roadworthy once again. Tim pulls out all the stops to straighten the buckles, fix the broken spokes and get the unicycle ready for further adventures with the next generation. Ready to put Mark Stuckey’s electrical expertise to the test are Florence, her dad Adrian and family friend Alex. They are entrusting Mark with an iconic 80s gadget – a canary yellow cassette player that belonged to Florence’s mum, Mel. Mel worked as the wig mistress for Les Misérables in the West End for 25 years, and the boombox was constantly blasting out Eurythmics or Michael Jackson in her wig room as the backdrop to plenty of gossip amongst the cast and crew. In 2001, Mel was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she sadly passed away 12 years later. The cassette player currently just chews up tapes, but the family would love to hear it operating at its best again. Mark works on its drive belts and clutch, and even demagnetises the head, all in an effort to honour Mel’s West End legacy, blare out some iconic 80s bangers and keep her memory well and truly alive. Next into the barn is Keith from Oxford, bringing in something contagious that most people try to avoid for the attention of David Burville. This unique model of an adenovirus was made by Keith’s father Robin, an electron microscopist. Back in the 1960s, Robin worked at the National Institute of Medical Research, studying viruses and developing vaccines. One day, he had a eureka moment, finding and photographing the adenovirus – the virus that is responsible for the common cold – for the very first time. Robin’s colleagues were in awe, and the national press picked up the story. Wanting to be able to explain the virus’s shape more clearly and how it worked, Robin decided to create a 3D model from his 2D photo. It was his pride and joy. Over the years, some of the polystyrene balls have been damaged or fallen off, and the family are keen to have it repaired to give the next generation the opportunity to learn from it. David must come up with a strategy to contain elements of the virus and to prevent the damage spreading in order to save this extraordinary piece of family and medical history. Finally, Paul from Barnsley has brought a piece of Edwardian gadgetry for Brenton to focus on. The Houghton brass and wood field camera was bought at auction by Paul and his brother Ian, a passionate photographer and Paul’s close companion through all manner of childhood scrapes and adventures. The brothers had hoped that Ian, who was a dab hand at most things, could mend the broken shutter. However, before he was able to repair it, Ian was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and the family lost him in 2019. To help Paul reconnect with cherished memories of his brother, Brenton must get the shutter working and replace a missing glass screen in order to restore life to the brass plate camera, the embodiment of a brotherly bond.

Grabbing a narwhal tusk mounted on a nearby wall, Darryn, with former and serving prisoners, managed to fend off the attacker, protecting others until police arrived. Darryn was awarded a gallantry medal by the late queen, and to the outside world his actions were heroic. But the aftermath proved far more complex, and he says it has left him changed forever. Now, he dedicates his life to rehabilitation work and runs a home for former offenders, alongside one of the prisoners who stood with him on the bridge that day. Bill believes that Nick, a gifted sculptor, would be the perfect artist to capture this remarkable man who does not see himself as a hero. But can Nick create a sculpture of Darryn that is truly three-dimensional – one that acknowledges the bravery of his actions that day as well as the emotional consequences they left behind?

After a devastating fire three years ago put the project in jeopardy, thatcher Scott is looking to the future and building a new cookhouse, using traditional techniques and local materials. It could mean big business for the centre and increased opportunities to work with the local community, but creating Iron Age dwellings in the modern age is anything but simple. Will then heads off to Scone Palace, crowning place of Scottish kings, to meet a couple with a family heirloom in need of rescue. It’s a handwritten Gaelic piping music book, handed down from Ian’s great-grandfather Donald, known as the Hero of Alma after his actions in the Crimean War. Now severely damaged, the music in its brittle pages might be lost forever if bookbinder Chris Shaw cannot bring it back from the brink. Ian will never play the songs it contains, as he has been battling motor neurone disease for the past decade, but he hopes if Chris Shaw is successful, the book can be passed down to his own son, also named Donald in honour of his ancestor. Always in search of a new challenge, Dom joins a Perth-based family business whose handmade sporrans are the perfect accessory to Scotland’s famous kilts. It’s a critically endangered heritage craft that dates back to the 12th century, and the family is turning to technology to keep up with the challenge faced by cheaper, mass-produced versions made abroad. In the vast warehouse, their belongings are laid out like an installation of life with five young children. The Parej family have kept hold of every single one of their possessions, including hundreds of baby items, which tell the story of a couple who have worked tirelessly to keep their family afloat while navigating hardship. Stacey and her team tackle the jam-packed home of dads Craig and Craig.
Stacey and the team are in the Midlands to help dads Craig and Craig transform their three-bedroom semi. ‘Big Craig’, a hair salon owner, and ‘Little Craig’, a call centre operative, became fathers when they adopted their now five-year-old daughter. The two Craigs and their families have showered her with love – and a lot of toys. But it’s not just toys from well-meaning relatives, as self-confessed sentimentalist Big Craig has kept absolutely everything their daughter has ever owned, for fear of letting go of something that is part of her childhood and could be sentimental for her as she grows up. With Stacey and the team’s help, the family begin by packing all their possessions into boxes, stripping every item from their home to reveal the hidden potential beneath the chaos. Throughout the process, we get to know Big Craig, who not only keeps everything of his daughter’s, but has also built up a huge gin bottle collection over the last ten years. Little Craig, who is naturally more organised, harbours a love of crafting which has resulted in craft supplies being squirrelled away all over the house but little space to actually craft. The team learn about the joys and challenges of the adoption process, the fathers' unadulterated love for their daughter and their desire to get on top of the clutter so that they can potentially adopt again in the future. Once the house is packed, the family’s belongings are displayed in a vast warehouse – a striking art installation of their lives. Among the 400 boxes unpacked from the two Craigs’ home, the team find 195 pairs of shoes, 63 brushes and combs, 208 gin bottles... and 400 tampons which Little Craig was collecting for the homeless but had never got round to donating! Emotional moments unfold as Big Craig sorts through old toys, recalling the story of El being taken into care with just an armful of belongings, and the couple reflect on their desire to adopt again so that El can have a sibling. Big Craig also talks about his love of collecting, which came from his beloved grandad – a father figure and role model. Big Craig hopes to find his grandad’s old pipe, which he is sure he put somewhere safe but is nowhere to be found. Back in the Craigs' home, carpenter Rob faces the challenge of converting El’s bedroom into a bed-and-elevated play area, with built-in storage, in order to double her space for fun and games. Rob also plans to transform the garden room to give Big Craig a place to cut hair and Little Craig a place to craft with El... plus a gin bar for relaxing. After two long days at the warehouse, with the most treasured and essential items carefully chosen, Stacey and the team pack everything back into the house, transforming it into a functional home with a spare room that makes expanding the family a real possibility for the first time. Iwan spring-cleans, and Dilly uses her organisational expertise to ensure the very best systems are put in place for the family. It’s a race against the clock to complete the makeover before the family returns. Will the team’s efforts to declutter bring about the organised home that the Craigs have been dreaming of?

But is this image justified? Or does Romania have more to offer? Landing in Bucharest, the only place in the country he’s heard of, Romesh meets political activist and media expert Angi Serban at the parliament palace, the astonishing architectural behemoth built on the command of the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Failing to warn him about the miles they’re about to clock, she takes Rom out of the capital to explore many amazing things that are overlooked in this vast slice of eastern Europe. Romesh and Angi embark on a journey through the country’s seemingly endless and varied landscapes. Along the way, they sample Romania’s ghoulish side, seeing Transylvania and Vlad the Impaler’s castle and paying their respects in a 'merry' cemetery. They also witness cars rolling up hills, drive along the spectacular yet dangerous Transfagarasan Highway, dance to world-famous Roma music and take part in a spiritual ceremony in Romania’s traditional heartland. But whilst Romesh realises the beauty of Romania, he also learns how the hangover of the communist regime remains, what challenges are still faced today and why more people visiting would help the country to continue to move forward.

Will and Dom travel to Devon, and where better to find Daisy, the oversized fibreglass dairy cow lantern? She’s been a fixture at Hemyock Light Parade for a decade, but time hasn’t been kind to their bovine mascot. She’s lost an ear, a couple of hooves, and her body is dirty and cracked. It’s going to take some lateral thinking, and the skills of some exciting new experts, if she’s to take her place at the head of the parade once again. In Poole, Will meets Ronnie, who has a musical instrument that reached the peak of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s and which he would like fixed. It’s a banjolele that his father, part of the Windrush generation, brought from Jamaica to England. Most famously associated with George Formby, Ronnie’s mixture of banjo and ukulele is struggling to play a tune now, suffering from damage to the frets and a loose drum head. They’ll need to be fixed before luthier Julyan can even think about starting the cosmetic work required to the veneer. Dom checks in on an old friend in Torquay. He’s at Dave Smith’s workshop, overlooking the harbour, to try his hand at the lost art of brilliant cutting before turning a newly decorated piece of glass into a Victorian-style mirror. 20:00 The Repair Shop Series 15: Episode 12
The team fix a unique lamp, some distinguished running shoes and a reel-to-reel recorder.
First to arrive in the barn is John Wilson from London, with a battered survivor of heady days in the capital for upholsterer Sonnaz and paper conservator Angelina. The unique lamp belonged to John’s close friend Brian, who used to host lavish cocktail parties in the 1980s in his Soho flat in London. Everything in his bijou apartment was designed around the lamp. It was a period full of happy times, but then the Aids epidemic hit. Tragically, Brian was diagnosed as HIV-positive, and John became his carer and companion. Brian passed away in the mid-1990s, but not before gifting the lamp to John. However, sadly, over the years, it has become brittle and broken. Sonnaz and Angelina pair up to repair the cracks, sourcing a suitable material to fill in what has been lost, and get the lamp ready for the big switch-on. Next comes Chris Gosling from Surrey, who brings in some shoes with a surprising past for the attention of cobbler Dean. Chris’s father, George, was a great athlete, being a training partner for Roger Bannister’s pace-setting runs when he broke the four-minute mile. He wore the shoes when running the mile, achieving an impressive time of four minutes and 12 seconds. But George kept his passion a secret, with Chris only finding out about his father’s talent after he died. Wear has brought the shoes to a standstill, but now a multiple marathon runner himself, Chris is determined to see the shoes right again. Dean turns his attention to fixing the tears and repairing the stitching before buffing these elite running shoes back to their very best. Sisters Sara and Simone have travelled to the barn from Somerset, with an inherited gem that needs Richard Talman’s gift for salvaging sparkly things. The brooch belonged to their step-grandmother Jean Bull, but they sadly never met her. Jean, along with many other women from the local area of Somerset, took a shopping day trip to Switzerland in 1973, but the plane crashed and sadly Jean lost her life along with 107 other victims. The sisters each inherited a brooch from her – a red one for Simone and a green one for Sara. They wore them proudly when visiting Switzerland on the 50th anniversary of the crash. But when they returned, Sara accidentally put her brooch through the wash, leaving it bent and with gems missing. Richard works tirelessly to get the precious costume jewellery back into shape and to restore its sparkle ready to dazzle again. Finally, of the many talents beneath the barn’s thatch, Michael Whitehead has come from Lancashire hoping electronics wizard Mark Stuckey can revive a retro audio device. The reel-to-reel recorder belonged to Michael’s father Alan, who sang in pubs and clubs across Greater Manchester, and who used the device to record songs and learn the words prior to his performances. When he died, the music, sadly, died too in the family. With his hopes set on hearing his dear dad’s voice again on the reels, it’s down to Mark to make things right. With broken belts, a melted transformer and motor, and a faulty circuit board, Mark has a major catastrophe on his hands. However, determined to get the reel-to-reel recorder working again, he pulls out all the stops for Michael to hear the precious sound of his crooner father once again.

21:00 Ambulance Series 16: 4. Down the Ditch
Paramedics race to help a farmer trapped after crashing into a ditch on a country lane.
Across rural Yorkshire, ambulance crews face a demanding start to the shift as multiple road traffic collisions unfold. Among them, Halifax crew Kanada and Chris help a farmer who has crashed into a dry-stone wall while on his way to feed his animals. Meanwhile, specialist paramedic Matt begins his shift in Sheffield, caring for another farmer who is experiencing memory loss after his vehicle overturned into a roadside ditch. It marks the start of a busy run of shifts for Matt, whose advanced skills mean he can treat a wide variety of conditions suffered by his patients – from road traffic accidents to supporting an elderly patient who is reaching the end of her life. Four hours into the shift, the team in control are grappling with an influx of emergency calls as demand on the service shows no signs of slowing. Crewmates Kanada and Chris are dispatched to Elland, near Leeds, to help a 64-year-old female who has tumbled off her mobility scooter and has already been waiting over 30 minutes for an ambulance. The crew arrive to find the patient surrounded by a crowd who have all stopped to help. Fortunately, aside from a bruised eye, the patient has avoided any major injuries. The crew decides it is safe to drop her off at home, where a freshly brewed cup of tea awaits. In Halifax, Siobhan and Ellie are dispatched to their sixth patient of the shift – a 91-year-old male coughing up phlegm. On arrival, it is clear the patient is very poorly and nearing the end of his life. After speaking with the nursing team and making him as comfortable as possible, the crew decide they can respect his wishes and keep him at home. At the start of a new day for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, call volumes are at a normal level. Heading up the critical care team is Matt. He is dispatched to a 96-year-old end-of-life patient who has fallen out of bed. After Matt and the team get the patient up off the floor, he supports the family, sharing his own experience of caring for his father and the lesson he learned about how important it was to take care of himself through the process. With the afternoon in full swing, Halifax crew Siobhan and Ellie are dispatched to a Category 2 COPD patient with low sats. After carrying out their assessments, Siobhan is concerned that the patient might be suffering from a mini-stroke and advises a trip to hospital to be on the safe side. She later shares how the job felt particularly close to home, as her own father suffered from a stroke just a week previously. Meanwhile, Kanada and Chris are diverted to a Category 1 patient with breathing difficulties – it turns out he is the same end-of-life patient Siobhan and Ellie attended the previous day. On scene this time, it is clear the patient’s symptoms have worsened, and the crew agree it is in his best interests to receive further investigations at hospital even though he had expressly stated he wanted to be left to die at home. As the shift draws to a close, critical care paramedic Matt is dispatched to another end-of-life patient in severe pain. Matt’s advanced skills mean he can provide enhanced pain relief at home, so there is no need for the patient to travel to hospital. This episode highlights the emotional and professional challenges faced by Yorkshire’s ambulance crews as they balance urgent emergencies with compassionate end-of-life care. Showing paramedics not just as medical responders to patients but as sources of comfort, empathy and strength, when families are in their most vulnerable moments. It becomes clear how deeply their work intertwines with their own lives and personal experiences to influence the care they give, day in and day out.

Kate joins the vets and keepers as they head up to the cheetah house to check on Wilma, one of the great success stories at the park. Against the odds, however, Wilma has been an astonishing mother raising multiple cubs, many of which have gone on to be parents to other cheetahs, adding substantially to the worldwide breeding programme. So, it’s a desperate blow when Kate and the team discover that 14-year-old Wilma’s kidneys are functioning poorly. The kidney disease is irreversible, so now the team must find ways for Wilma to live out her days in the most comfortable way as they also celebrate her extraordinary life. Wildlife cameraman Hamza Yassin has been given special access to film the native species of Half Mile Lake – but will he spot the illusive kingfisher? 15:45 The Repair Shop on the Road Series 1: Ayrshire - Restoring Robert Burns Graffiti R
The team restores a unique piece of Scottish history - a window signed by Robert Burns.
Carpenter Will and horologist Steve are far from home today, exploring Ayrshire on Scotland’s west coast. Their first stop is the Scottish Boat Building School in Irvine, where Tom is waiting with a very unusual vessel. It’s a three-piece canoe designed in the 1930s and small enough to fit in the guard’s van of a train, which meant tourists could bring their own canoes on holiday in the years before owning a car was commonplace. It represents a different kind of freedom for Tom, though. His achondroplasia means a regular-size canoe is too difficult to manoeuvre. If this folding version can be fixed, he will finally have the freedom to take his daughter out exploring the waterways of Britain. Ayrshire is the birthplace of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, and many of the towns and villages in the region can boast strong links to his life and works. So it’s no surprise that when Will is called to Barr Castle in Galston, he comes face-to-face with a very special artefact. It’s a windowpane with a hand inscription by Robert Burns himself. However, it has suffered some damage in the past, so for decades its current custodians have had it hidden away in a cupboard for safekeeping. With the help of ceramics expert Kirsten Ramsay, they hope to once again put it on display. Fixing glass is notoriously difficult, and Kirsten definitely feels the pressure of getting such an important object looking back to its best. While in the area, Steve takes the chance to visit Kays in Mauchline, who have been crafting curling stones for over 170 years. Using a dense granite quarried from a single Scottish island, these dedicated craftspeople hone stones of unparalleled quality for use in the winter Olympics. Steve gets the chance to help with the process, but will it be gold, silver or bronze for his efforts?

20:00 Race Across the World Series 6: Episode 1
Five teams set off from Palermo on a 12,000km race to reach Hatgal in northern Mongolia.
Five intrepid teams embark on the journey of a lifetime, racing more than 12,000km across Europe and Asia, the largest continental area on earth. The route carves through eight distinctive countries: Italy, Greece, Türkiye, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia – each with its own language, culture and climate. In the most extreme race to date, conditions swing from 30°C Mediterranean heat to subarctic temperatures of -20°C. And they’ve got to do it all on a budget of less than £26 per person per day. The teams will race from Palermo on the island of Sicily all the way to the remote village of Hatgal on the shores of Lake Hövsgöl in northern Mongolia. Retracing parts of the ancient Silk Road, they will follow in the footsteps of traders who once connected the west and east across these vast, unforgiving landscapes. They will have to navigate their way from the bustling streets of Italy – one of the world’s most visited destinations – to one of its most remote, the windswept Mongolian Steppe. With smartphones, internet access and bank cards left behind, they are armed with nothing but the cash equivalent of flying the route. The race begins in the city of Palermo, the capital of the Mediterranean’s largest island and most conquered city in Europe. To reach the first checkpoint, teams must first travel through southern Italy. A ferry across the Tyrrhenian Sea could propel them straight to the vibrant city of Naples, or they could choose to travel by land through the rugged region of Calabria, passing hilltop hamlets and coastal enclaves, each with its own unique character. Once in Puglia, the race continues across the Adriatic towards the first checkpoint: Fiskardo on the island of Kefalonia. Childhood best friends from Liverpool, Jo and Kush, who are both 19, are the youngest duo in the race. Still living at home with their mums and fresh out of school, this is their first real taste of independence. Their Scouse charm and willingness to throw themselves into local life proves fruitful, but when they cross paths with another team, their laid-back approach gives way to a more competitive streak! Inseparable siblings Katie, 20, and Harrison, 23, from Manchester, may do everything together, but they could not be more different when it comes to the race. Accountant Harrison’s laser-like focus on the budget and high-paid work takes them to an upmarket cafe in Naples, leaving Katie to embrace whatever comes their way. Junior doctor Molly, 23, and her father Andrew, 54, have always been close, but as Molly prepares to begin her medical career, she wants to prove to her dad that she is more capable than he gives her credit for. Geography teacher Andrew’s desire to explore sees them head away from the main transport hubs and into a labyrinth of sea caves in Maratea. Puja, 31, and her cousin Roshni, 32, spent their twenties building successful careers and putting wanderlust on hold. Determined to stretch every penny, their plan to avoid pricey areas and expensive transport leads them towards a rural homestay and a more authentic Italian travel experience. Unlikely duo Mark, 66, and Margo, 59, have spent the past 40 years with a typically fractious in-law relationship. But after recently putting their differences aside in pursuit of a shared goal – caring for a loved one – they have developed a fondness for each other’s company. A slow start leaves them trailing the pack, exposing their very different approaches to the race. And when faced with expensive Italian accommodation, they’re forced to put their friendship to the ultimate test... sharing a double bed! The race will test the five teams both physically and emotionally, pushing them to their absolute limits. But with their feet on the ground and their eyes wide open, the rewards will be immense, and the memories unforgettable. Only one team can emerge victorious as they battle to be the first to reach the finish line and claim the £20,000 prize in their race across the world.

22:40 Harry Clark Goes to Rome
Harry Clark embarks on a personal pilgrimage to Rome, where he attempts to meet the pope.
Blending warmth, wit and emotional honesty, Harry Clark Goes to Rome follows Harry’s personal journey to re-connect with his Catholic faith in these modern times. In this documentary, 25-year-old Harry Clark of BBC Traitors and Pilgrimage: The Road to the Alps fame embarks on a personal pilgrimage to Rome in search of answers about belief, identity and what it means to be a 'good' Catholic today. He also has an audacious quest to meet one of the most powerful figures in the world – and latest addition to his (spiritual) family – the recently appointed Pope Leo XIV. Living with his close-knit, real family in Slough, in the house where he grew up, Harry’s faith remains central to his life. But as the pace of modern living accelerates – pubs, clubs, media events, and relationships – his faith increasingly clashes with the traditions passed down by his mother and grandparents. Can belief survive modern life, and what does it mean to be a good Catholic in the midst of it all? For Harry, there is only one place that might offer answers – the home of the Catholic faith, Rome and the Vatican City. As he prepares for his pilgrimage, Harry talks to those closest to him: his family and friends, his childhood priest and the most important woman in his life – his mum, Georgia. Through these conversations, he explores what it means to be Catholic, is challenged about his lapsed habits and learns about traditional Catholic pilgrim practices – fasting, confession, visiting the tomb of a saint and saying a prayer for someone he loves in Rome. These lead to deeply personal insights into Harry’s life, including an emotional visit to his grandad, a former footballer who is currently battling dementia. Running parallel to this spiritual journey is Harry’s determined – and often comic – attempt to reach the man at the very top of the Vatican hierarchy, Pope Leo XIV himself. Through letters, phone calls, social media messages – and any other way he can think of – Harry pursues a meeting with the pope, despite the scepticism of those around him. Whilst undertaking a 24-hour fast and accompanied by his mum, they arrive in the holy city of Rome. Among nodding Pope figurines, al fresco dining and streets lined with tourists, devotees and religious figures, they explore important places of pilgrimage. But at the end of the first night, as Harry breaks his fast, he worries the experience isn’t bringing him any closer to God. At the pope’s Angelus in St Peter’s Square, Harry catches his first glimpse of Pope Leo XIV. He takes the opportunity to see if a member of the Swiss Guard can help him get closer to a meeting with the pontiff, but again he is unsuccessful. To find a deeper connection with his faith, Harry and his mum make an emotional visit to the tomb of 15-year-old millennial saint, Carlo Acutis, which raises difficult questions for them both, whilst a meeting with Sister Emanuela sees Harry nervously commit to undertaking his first private confession in nearly a decade. As the journey reaches its climax, Harry is granted a meeting with Cardinal Roche – a member of the conclave responsible for appointing the new pope. Here, Harry finds an opportunity to raise some of the wider questions he has about his Church. But will this meeting within the pope’s inner circle prove to be his chance to reach the very top of the Vatican and achieve what feels like a one-in-a-million moment? And what impact will this personal pilgrimage have on his faith and his understanding of what it means to be a modern Catholic?

23:40 Ambulance Series 16: 3. The Siege R [W]
Crews are called to a siege in Leeds, where police are preparing to raid the premises.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service have already answered 300 calls for help when a new emergency comes in from police. They have received reports of a man in Harehills, Leeds, threatening to harm himself and the police officers attending. Due to the potential level of threat, multiple resources are dispatched, including the hazardous area response team. Meanwhile, Nagina and Mo must be ready to enter the building to treat any potential casualties. After clearing from their second job of the shift, married crewmates Jen and Elliott are dispatched to Paul, a 61-year-old male patient in Yeadon who is having difficulty speaking. After carrying out tests, the crew are concerned that Paul's symptoms may be indicative of a stroke and decide they must take him to hospital for specialist tests. Seven hours into the shift, and call volumes have more than doubled. With no crews available, dispatcher Joyce is struggling to allocate resources to the 25 patients waiting for an ambulance. After nearly two hours on scene in Harehills, the police prepare to force entry into the property, with Nagina and Mo following behind to treat anyone who might be injured. The police successfully de-escalate the incident. Relieved there are no casualties, Nagina and Mo are finally released from the scene, which means they are available to respond to an ongoing call for a 72-year-old male patient who has fallen down the stairs. On arrival, the patient’s worried wife watches on as the crew carry out their checks. They are concerned the patient may be suffering from a serious infection. In Leeds, Jen and Elliott are five minutes away from a Category 1 patient suffering a seizure at the train station. On arrival, the crew discover the patient is Polish, and the language barrier means they must use their detective skills to determine the cause of the seizure. Eventually, they learn that the patient and her mother have recently been made homeless and have no idea where to turn for help. For Elliott, the job sparks memories of when he first began his journey to become a paramedic, when he found himself homeless and living in a tent. It's the start of a new 12-hour shift for Yorkshire Ambulance Service. Crewmates Nagina and Mo are back on duty working across Leeds. They are immediately dispatched to a 94-year-old female patient, Audrey, whose carer found her on the floor, where she has been stuck since 5.00am. After ruling out serious injury, Nagina and Mo help Audrey to her feet and strongly suggest a trip to hospital to ensure she has not suffered further damage from her long time on the floor. But Audrey is stoic and decides a cup of tea will be enough to bring her back to full health. Whilst she sips her tea, Nagina checks in with the local home nursing team, who agree to visit Audrey and carry out some blood tests, which is enough to reassure Nagina a trip to hospital won’t be necessary. Critical care paramedic John is dispatched to a Category 1 call for a patient who has collapsed and is not breathing. The service receives a further nine calls for patients in cardiac arrest over the next hour, exposing the limited specialist resources available to help support ambulance crews. After over half an hour performing CPR, John and the team make the difficult decision to stop treatment and sadly break the news to the patient’s wife that he has died, despite their best efforts. Crewmates Jen and Elliott are available to travel to a male patient also found not breathing. As they are only seven minutes away, they will be first on scene to lead treatment before any specialist resources become available. Jen and Elliott manage to obtain an ROSC – a return of spontaneous circulation – for their patient and work quickly to transport him to hospital for further life-saving treatment.

In Edinburgh, 70-year-old Alister’s cycling accidents have resulted in a few knocks to his health and his confidence. Roman Kemp has a counterintuitive solution: easy exercise. 21:00 Kegworth: Flight to Disaster R [W]
A passenger flight from London to Belfast ends in motorway horror.
It should have been a routine flight from London to Belfast. But on a January night in 1989, British Midland Airways Flight BD092 became the centre of one of Britain’s worst air disasters. Mid-flight, the plane started violently shuddering. With smoke and smells of burning, pilots shut an engine down and diverted for an emergency landing in the East Midlands. Yards from the safety of the runway, the plane plunged into an embankment at the side of the motorway. Despite catastrophic damage and wreckage drenched in aviation fuel, remarkably rescuers found survivors. Through deeply personal interviews, passengers recount the terror of those final moments and the unimaginable aftermath. Coming just weeks after a bomb destroyed the Pan Am 103 jet over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, air crash investigators scrambled to find a cause for the disaster. Rare archive footage and expert analysis uncovers the chain of decisions that sealed the fate of 47 passengers and injured dozens more. How did a routine flight turn into a catastrophe? And what lessons were carved from the wreckage to make flying safer today? From the terror in the cabin to the heroism on the ground, this is the story of the Kegworth air disaster, the crash that changed aviation forever.

Ever wondered how it would feel to be eaten by a pride of lions? Well now you can find out, because Kate and the team have managed to capture a prey’s-eye view of exactly what it would be like and possibly the most lethal Animal Park footage ever! There is also an update on one of the least successful love stories ever. Binturongs are a tree-dwelling mammal found in the rainforests of South East Asia. They are also considered vulnerable to extinction, so it’s important that animals in captivity do their bit to boost the numbers. But in the case of Baloo and Adana, things haven’t quite gone to plan. The keepers thought they would be the perfect match, but when they were first paired up, neither showed the slightest bit of interest. Things really went off the rails when Baloo was more interested in getting out of his enclosure than getting intimate with Adana. So will this be the year that this pair finally get it on? One thing is for certain. The committed keepers are not giving up on their mission of successfully breeding binturong babies, and today they put a new plan into action they hope might just do the trick. Wildlife cameraman Hamza Yassin is used to hiding himself away in the most secretive spots to get pictures of the planet’s most elusive animals, but today his challenge is a bit different. Hamza’s mission is to befriend a kangaroo, known as Brave, who is notoriously nervous around men. Can Hamza win him over?

08:00 The Repair Shop Series 15: Episode 12 R

It wouldn’t be a series of Beechgrove Garden without a potato crop to plant and look forward to, so Brian and Carole will be planting a number of varieties. It has now been ten years since the garden’s stem bank border was started, and Brian is back in there to start some much-needed maintenance-pruning, with planting to come, that will refresh that part of the garden. The stem bank border contains plants that are known for their attractive stems and range of colours that look best in winter. Last year, some of the Beechgrove presenters took part in a competition to see who could plant the most productive border. This year, there is a new challenge, which Brian and Carole will be revealing. And a trip to Edinburgh to catch up with what George Anderson is doing in his own garden in Joppa, and there are the week’s usual handy hints.
