Illegal farming exposed and wildfire destroys land and lives – disaster hits rural areas.

In Hertfordshire, police rush to help an injured man trapped by his car outside a derelict farmhouse – but what begins as an emergency call quickly turns into a serious animal welfare investigation. Inside the property, officers uncover alarming conditions and evidence of hundreds of neglected birds, prompting fears of an illegal chicken farm operating under appalling conditions. As the rural police team dig deeper, suspicions grow that the man they rescued may also be at the centre of the case. In the Scottish Highlands, firefighters battled a wildfire so vast that it was visible from space. As the blaze tore through farmland and a nature reserve, local farmers and wildlife wardens joined emergency crews on the front line. Two years later, those who fought the flames reflect on the devastation and the lessons learned about preventing future disasters. In Dumfries, reporter Paul Colgan takes part in lifesaving first aid training designed specifically for farmers. Led by volunteer medics with experience in military trauma care, the course equips participants with the skills to handle on-farm emergencies, from machinery accidents to severe injuries, that could mean the difference between life and death in Britain’s most dangerous profession.

  1. 06:30 Shift the Thrift Series 1: 2. High Wycombe R [AD]

Liz and Alice thrift in High Wycombe for Great Ormond Street.

Joanna Page heads to the historic market town of High Wycombe, where centuries-old traditions sit alongside a thriving charity shop scene. Going head-to-head are mother-and-daughter duo Liz and Alice, raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital – a cause that is deeply personal to them after Alice received a life-saving heart transplant there as a child. With £100 each to spend and just 60 minutes on the clock, they split up with expert thrifters Tom and Terry to scour the town for hidden gems. Liz begins with a clear plan: focus on quality ceramics and dependable fashion labels. Her steady approach quickly yields premium high-street brands and traditional pottery pieces that she believes will attract reliable bidders. But her preference for safe buys means she overlooks Joanna’s pick of the day – a delicate Japanese Kutani sake bottle with strong collector appeal. Alice, meanwhile, admits to being indecisive, and her hesitation costs her precious early minutes. After browsing several shops without committing, she finally finds momentum with a vintage leather handbag and a classic wool coat. With time slipping away, she and Tom make a dramatic dash to an out-of-town furniture warehouse, only to lose their bearings as the clock ticks down. In a bold final move, Alice stakes her remaining budget on a substantial mid-century Singer sewing machine, a risk that could either secure victory or sink her chances. For the upcycling challenge, Liz selects a modest wooden desk organiser which is transformed into a vibrant statement piece by expert upcycler Tristan. Alice’s sewing machine cabinet, meanwhile, is carefully restored, stripping back decades of wear to reveal its original character and craftsmanship. At the live-streamed auction, family rivalry bubbles to the surface. Liz proves composed and persuasive, confidently pitching her items and helping bidders picture them in their homes. Alice counters with passion and determination, particularly when presenting her larger gamble to the online audience. When live sales and online totals are combined, it’s a tense and emotional finish. But beyond the competition, the real triumph is the impressive sum raised for Great Ormond Street Hospital – proof that courage, conviction and a little thrifting nerve can go a long way.

  10. 15:30 Ancient Invisible Cities Series 1: 3. Istanbul R [AD][S]

Dr Michael Scott uncovers the invisible ancient treasures of Istanbul, Turkey.

Classical historian Dr. Michael Scott takes us on an extraordinary journey through the often-invisible treasures of one of the greatest ancient cities in the world – Istanbul. The city has been at the crossroads of Europe and Asia for over two and a half millennia. From the Greeks and Romans, through the Ottomans to the Turks, Istanbul has been fought over, destroyed and rebuilt time after time. First Michael brings the city’s tumultuous history alive in one iconic building - the Hagia Sophia. Built by the Romans, this Christian Cathedral has survived earthquakes, riots, sieges and conquest to become a mosque and now a museum. As Michael explores, he reveals the ingenious solutions that enabled this awe-inspiring church to survive 1,500 years of turmoil. As Istanbul, once known as Constantinople, was built by Emperor Constantine to outdo Rome itself, Michael goes in search of the mighty city the emperor built – Constantinople. Michael discovers that Istanbul is built upon layer upon layer of history and culture, one era's buildings erected on top of the other. With the help of local archeologists and experts, Michael delves into some surprising spaces – such as the once enormous Hippodrome. It began as a stadium for chariot racing but it's foundations were later converted into a huge water cistern to supply the Emperor’s Great Palace. Michael wades through its foul smelling water to uncover the Hippodrome’s secrets. With many of the city’s most extraordinary places concealed, out of sight or underground, we turn to the latest 3D imaging technology to reveal them. Our scanning team help us to see the city as no human eye ever could; peeling back the layers of history; showing how the city has had to reinvent itself over and over through its turbulent past. Michael’s adventure finds him unearthing a holy well, hidden 30 feet under a modern carpet shop. He walks high above the city on the most sophisticated and longest aqueduct of the Roman world and finds that part of the once glorious Great Palace of Constantine is now a burned out shelter for a homeless man. He explores the fortress headquarters of the Muslim Sultan who captured the city. And with the help of the hi-tech 3D scans, reveals one of the fortress towers as a ruthlessly efficient war machine that helped end the Roman Empire, less than 50 years before Columbus discovered America. Along the way Michael visits the teaming exuberance of the conquering Sultan’s Grande Bazaar and uncovers the engineering innovations of the magnificent Süleymaniye Mosque, a treasure of the Ottoman Empire’s “golden age”. But Michael goes beyond even the extraordinary 3D scans to experience Istanbul in a whole new way – through Virtual Reality - flying up, right through the ancient dome of the Hagia Sophia, seeing Istanbul as even the locals have never seen it before.

  14. 16:35 Secret Garden Series 1: 2. Bristol R [AD]

Foxes, hedgehogs, blue tits and frogs find surprising sanctuary in a small Bristol garden.

In the heart of Bristol lies a small city garden – just ten metres across – yet it is alive with more wildlife drama than its owner, artist and sculptor Lou, ever imagined. Surrounded by streets and traffic, her small oasis has become a refuge for wild creatures. Through winter and early spring, a young male fox treats Lou’s garden as the hub of his hundred-garden territory. Bolder than his rural cousins, he raids bird feeders, patrols bins and bristles at rival males when the cry of a vixen echoes across the neighbourhood. With as many as 50 foxes per square mile, competition is fierce. By day, a very different struggle plays out. A young blue tit, driven to the city by hunger, battles aggressive goldfinches, wily pigeons and the neighbourhood cat, Mr Fluffy, for a place at Lou’s feeder. As the city warms, another creature stirs. A female hedgehog wakes from hibernation and begins her nocturnal search for a mate. Lou and her neighbours have created a hedgehog highway linking 16 gardens, giving her a lifeline. She travels far, dodging pets and cars, before finally finding not one but several eager suitors. For hedgehogs, multiple fathers in a single litter is a clever evolutionary strategy. Lou’s pond becomes the stage for another miniature epic. A male frog must act fast before it fills with rivals. Soon it churns with a frenzy of mating. Dragonfly larvae patrol the depths, and only a tiny fraction of tadpoles ever become froglets. But those that do will repay the garden by keeping slugs in check. Raising a family in the city is never simple. The blue tit finds a nest box put up by Lou, but he and his mate struggle to keep their ten chicks alive. With insects in steep decline, they forage desperately. One chick survives long enough to face its greatest hazard: its first flight, straight onto Mr Fluffy’s turf. A bell on the cat’s collar gives the youngster just enough warning to escape. Beneath a neighbour’s shed, the fox’s mate has been raising four cubs. As the youngsters grow bolder, they venture out into the neighbourhood. From froglets climbing makeshift staircases to bees and spiders colonising sun-warmed walls, Lou’s small plot is a micro-wilderness. Together with neighbouring gardens, it forms a green network. Gardens make up a third of our city space, and across the country they are larger than all of Britain’s national nature reserves combined. For the hedgehog mother, the reward is great: four healthy hoglets exploring the world for the first time. It turns out that this city garden offers many animals a lifeline – a sanctuary in the heart of Bristol.

  19. 19:00 Secret Garden Series 1: 3. The Lake District [AD]

Mice, moles, swallows and newts race to breed in a beautiful garden in Cumbria.

David Attenborough tells the story of an idyllic English country garden in the Lake District. Owners Chris and Liz love their outdoor space and do everything they can to encourage wildlife. In spring, the garden is full of life: the orchard bursts with blossom, the flower beds are abuzz with bees, and the pond is awash with courting newts. Love is in the air! But the breeding season is short, and the clock is ticking for the garden’s inhabitants to find partners and raise families. As night falls, a field mouse ventures out right under the noses of the garden’s predators. She tunes into the ultrasonic serenade of a male, inaudible to predators and humans. But before she heads out across the vast, featureless lawn, she employs an extraordinary survival strategy to make sure she will find her way home. She positions landmarks on the short grass. Field mice are the only animals apart from humans known to do this. A few days later, a new arrival swoops in – a weary traveller who’s spent six long weeks on the wing, crossing continents to reach this special place – a barn swallow. Of the 25 million gardens in the UK, he has returned to the one where he was raised. He prepares a nest in the hope that his life partner will soon return. In the pond at the bottom of the garden, a female palmate newt is looking for her own Mr Right. Flirtatious males waft perfumes towards her to catch her attention. She’s picky, but eventually one impresses her. Days later, she carefully wraps her eggs in the leaves of pond plants to protect them until they hatch. As summer arrives, mini dramas play out all over the garden, most of which stay unnoticed by the humans who live alongside the wildlife in this magical place. A zebra jumping spider hunts garden pests in the warmth of the greenhouse, a semaphore fly impresses a potential mate by performing record-breaking backflips on the surface of the pond, a mole barrels through his tunnel network in search of a female, and butterflies emerge to flirt among the flowers. But raising a family here isn’t easy. Cumbria is the wettest county in England, and when the weather breaks, things take a turn for the worse. Britain’s flying insects have declined by 60 per cent in 20 years, and in the heavy rain, there are few around, so the swallow chicks go hungry – they can’t survive long without food. Even once the skies clear, the garden’s inhabitants face dangerous challenges – from death by lawnmower to the ever-present threat of predators, including pheasants. Pheasants originate from Asia, but every year, more than 30 million are released into the British countryside – and they have a taste for native insects, reptiles and amphibians. The field mouse – vulnerable to attack by owls, foxes and cats at night – does well to avoid a predatory kestrel. Incredibly, swallows come to the rescue, chasing the bird of prey away. But this garden is so rich in natural food, well-managed microhabitats and places to hide that many animals make it through. For those that survive, the garden is an extraordinary place – a little slice of paradise for animals and people alike.

The clinicians on the critical care desk listen in to the most serious of calls in order to decide if they require a specialist paramedic. As the shift begins, a call from a worried mother who says they have found their child not breathing is prioritised. Specialist paramedic Alistair is immediately dispatched to support a crew just arriving on scene. As Alistair travels on blue lights and sirens, control receive a welcome update that the child is not as poorly as first imagined, initiating a stand down for critical care. The team’s relief is palpable as they reflect on the situation being 'every parent’s worst nightmare'. In control today, it is married couple Katie and Stav who are responsible for 60 ambulances across West Yorkshire, including Wakefield crewmates Isbah and Nando and Castleford crew, Jeff and Eddie. The Castleford crew are dispatched to their first patient, a 51-year-old dialysis patient with suspected renal failure. After completing an ECG, the crew fear the patient could go into cardiac arrest so is in need of urgent treatment at hospital. After handing the patient over to hospital staff, Jeff becomes overwhelmed. He confides to Eddie how much the job has triggered him, sharing that he lost his father to renal failure during COVID. In Garforth, crewmates Isbah and Nando are sent to care for an 83-year-old patient at a doctor’s surgery, struggling with light-headedness and a high pulse rate of 160bpm. While they assess the patient, they learn she suffers from dementia and is solely cared for by her husband of 27 years. As the day shift draws to a close, Jeff and Eddie are attending their final patient of the shift; a male patient with difficulty in breathing. Despite advice from the crew, the patient declines a trip to hospital and instead, the crew arrange for a doctor’s prescription to help alleviate his symptoms – which fortunately is swiftly collected by his friend travelling on her mobility scooter. As a new 12-hour shift begins, Jeff and Eddie are dispatched to a patient who has fallen with an injury to her hip. The crew arrive to find the female patient outside her home complaining of a severe pain to her hip. The patient explains she was recently in a car accident and suffered multiple fractures and she’s fearful this could be a setback in her long journey to recovery. Meanwhile in Wakefield, Isbah and Nando are dispatched to the town hall for a 75-year-old female who has collapsed and is supported on scene by a worried friend. As they travel to hospital the patient talks of her battle with grief and anxiety, leading Isbah to share stories of her personal traumas which she experienced in her 20s. As his shift draws to a close, Alistair is dispatched to help 62-year-old Jon, a terminally ill cancer patient who is nearing the end of his life. Arriving on scene, Alistair finds John gravely unwell and delicately supports his worried family as they come to terms with the reality of their dad’s prognosis. Determined to help John, Alistair is focused on making John as comfortable as possible as he rings the local hospice and asks for them to admit him. The family are grateful for Alistair’s support in a difficult time. This episode explores how illness and injury can impact and shape the lives of not only patients, but also those working on the front line. We see crews confronted with stories which parallel their own, and witness how they draw on their personal experiences to bring empathy, reassurance, and hope to others navigating their own pain.

  11. 19:00 Artemis: To the Moon and Back R [AD]

The inside story of the Artemis II mission - filmed over three and a half years at NASA.

History in the making; the inside story of the Artemis II mission around the moon and back. Four astronauts - Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen - have just completed a ten-day mission going deeper into space than anyone has gone before. They are the first humans to circumnavigate the moon since 1972. For the last three and a half years, this Horizon special has had privileged access inside NASA to chronicle their mission. We hear from astronauts, engineers, technicians and mission directors - exploring what it takes to mount a moonshot in the 21st century - with further insights from some of the biggest names in space science, including Dame Dr Maggie Aderin and British astronaut Tim Peake. The ultimate goal for Artemis is to establish a permanent presence on the lunar surface, where astronauts can live and work for weeks at a time. It’s hugely ambitious, fraught with danger and very expensive – so far, the programme has cost in excess of $90 billion. We follow as engineers grapple with reusing existing rocket technology and adapting a faulty heatshield design - any error could have catastrophic consequences for the astronauts on board. All the while, China’s National Space Administration is heading for the same lunar real estate being targeted by NASA; the starter pistol has been fired on a new space race. When the Artemis II rocket and capsule are ready, they roll out from the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. After two delays due to fuel leaks, a launch date is set – 1 April 2026. For the crew, a three-year wait is over. Time for lift-off. The launch is spectacular – 2.2 million kilograms of fuel are required to propel the rocket into Low Earth Orbit. From there, the spacecraft performs a series of engine burns, as the astronauts acclimatise to life in deep space, where they are exposed to the full effects of cosmic radiation beyond the protection of Earth’s magnetosphere. On day six, they arrive at the moon – in time to witness a unique solar eclipse and carry out hours of lunar observation. In the process, they name a crater after Reid Wiseman’s late wife, Carroll, who died of cancer in 2020 – it is a moment of high emotion for the crew. When the lunar fly-by is over, Artemis II starts its return trip to Earth – arriving back at 32 times the speed of sound. It is a critical test of the heatshield that caused so much concern on Artemis I. How will hold up to the intense heat and stress of re-entry? And finally - with splashdown - the focus switches to future Artemis missions, when astronauts will land on the moon and start building a base on the lunar surface. Truly, this is the dawn of a new age of space exploration.

Eldest daughter Milly is back and forth to uni, twins Henry and Gregor have busy lives – with Henry taking GCSEs and Gregor requiring full-time care at home – and youngest daughter Rosie has lots of toys taking up vital space. Stacey challenges them to sort their lives out in just seven days by letting go of half their belongings, paving the way for a calmer, more functional space. Every possession is boxed up and removed, revealing the true potential of their home. The Mann-Monro family’s life is laid out before them in a vast warehouse. Among the mountains of belongings are precious items belonging to Mary’s late husband – things she packed away years ago but has never fully confronted. Teenagers Milly and Henry look through their dad’s old gadgets and keepsakes, and learn more about him through what is an emotional but rewarding process. For Mary, sorting through possessions she kept from the period when Gregor became disabled, following an illness, is particularly tough. She reflects on how, as a mum of four, she tried to stay strong for all the children and had to bottle her emotions in order to keep moving forward. Revisiting those memories, with Stacey gently supporting her, helps Mary finally process what her family went through and appreciate how far they have come. Meanwhile, back at the house, carpenter Rob takes on two ambitious builds: an amazing new music room and a teenage den that becomes a gentle reminder of their late dad. Rob incorporates the old projector and speakers he once owned, giving the children a comforting, modernised space where his presence is felt without overwhelming the room. With the deadline looming, Dilly works her organisational magic, while Iwan delivers a top-to-bottom clean. Finally, the team bring the carefully streamlined belongings back into the home, transforming chaos into calm and creating a space that truly works for all six members of the family. Will this makeover help the Mann-Monros move forward together and create the blended home they have always dreamed of?

The local community joined police officers to scour the fields and woods around where the little girl went missing, all hoping for a miracle. Sixteen days later, her body was found buried in woodland, and police launched the hunt for her killer. A forensic ecologist, Professor Patricia Wiltshire, is tasked with the key job of linking the site of the shallow grave to the suspect. And by analysing pollen on some of his belongings, she is able to place him at the site where Sarah’s body was found. The man who snatched Sarah’s life away was convicted of her murder and jailed for life. With revealing interviews from Professor Wiltshire and investigating officer Martin Underhill. In the summer of 2004 in Kingston upon Thames, a mother received a distressed message from her son Paul Dalton. Concerned about his welfare, she went to his house – which he shared with his wife and daughter – and made the horrific discovery of her daughter-in-law Tae Hui’s dismembered body in a chest freezer.

  22. 04:00 Race Across the World Series 6: Episode 3 R [AD]

The teams bid farewell to Europe and head into Asia, racing to the remote town of Halfeti.

BBC One’s much-loved, BAFTA-winning series Race Across the World is back on BBC One and BBC iPlayer as five teams set out on the journey of a lifetime, travelling at ground level through eight distinctive countries, crossing southern Europe and central Asia. With smartphones, internet access and bank cards left behind, they are armed with nothing but the cash equivalent of flying the route. As the third leg begins, the stakes couldn’t be higher, with one thing at the forefront of everyone’s mind – the team in last place will face elimination. The five pairs wave goodbye to Europe as they head into Asia, racing from bustling Istanbul to the remote riverside town of Halfeti in south east Türkiye. Perched on the banks of the Euphrates River, much of Halfeti was submerged when the Birecik Dam flooded the area, leaving a lone minaret rising from the water. In a leg where every decision has consequences, teams face a crucial choice. They can head south and take advantage of the well-connected tourist hubs on the Turkish Riviera, or they can cut directly across country, retracing part of the ancient Silk Road as they journey through central Türkiye. Both routes converge on the southern city of Gaziantep, where the final dash to Halfeti begins. Katie takes charge and persuades brother Harrison to tick off a bucket-list experience. An early morning wake-up to watch the hot-air balloons rising over the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia shows Harrison the value of swapping efficiency for adventure. While he’s pleased with their position in the race so far, making the most of the experience may require him to start taking Katie’s advice. After soaring up the leader board in the last leg, cousins Puja and Roshni have every reason to celebrate, not least because it’s Puja’s birthday. Buoyed by newfound confidence and determined to stay in the race, they follow their hearts and volunteer at a turtle sanctuary, where Puja reflects on the loved ones she would usually celebrate with. Chalk-and-cheese in-laws Mark and Margo are united in their desire to avoid elimination as they head via the capital, Ankara. Taking on work in a converted caravanserai, they each lean into their strengths – Margo, front of house, waiting tables, Mark in the kitchen striking up a friendship with the local chef. The experience reveals just how much more the journey could offer them both, but to continue, they need to stay in the race. On their way to the checkpoint, Mark refuses to cave in to impulsive Margo, a decision that saves them money but costs valuable time. Fearful of elimination, Andrew and Molly’s competitive streak takes over, prompting a bold change of strategy as they tackle a route they might previously have avoided, heading towards some of Türkiye’s largest coastal cities. Concerned about their finances, a last-minute stop to pick up work in Adana proves hard for Molly to stomach. Best friends from Liverpool Jo and Kush begin the leg trailing behind. Determined to stay in contention, they plot a direct route and throw everything they can into making up time, but an early missed connection threatens to derail their progress before they’ve even left Istanbul. As they attempt to stay in the race, they’re faced with a high-stakes decision that could change the course of their journey. The contestants must draw on every bit of their ingenuity and resilience to race quickly and strategically, battling to stay in the competition and avoid seeing their journey cut short. This leg will challenge all five teams both physically and emotionally, pushing them to their limits. Yet with their feet on the ground and their eyes wide open, the rewards will be great and the memories everlasting. But only one pair can cross the finish line first, claiming victory and taking home the £20,000 prize in a Race Across the World.

Police suspected he’d come to harm but struggled to find proof without a body. Then, six weeks after his disappearance, they made a shocking discovery – the man’s body was found stuffed in a wheelie bin and dumped in a lake. They soon had two prime suspects, but detectives needed to find a way to place them and the victim at the same place at the same time. They enlisted the help of Paul Hope, a cell site expert, who by analysing their mobile phone network data was able to track their movements on the night of the murder and help prove their guilt. With emotional testimony from Pat’s daughter Morgan, who still misses her beloved father. Traces of soil are often used to answer the ‘where’ questions in an investigation. Where something happened? Where something went? Where an investigation might lead? His disappearance became a major missing person's inquiry, but with no clues as to his whereabouts, his body wasn’t found. London-based couple Polly and Callum are going head-to-head to raise money for their chosen charity, Macmillan, with the help of husband-and-wife experts Pete and Lola. With £100 and just 60 minutes on the clock, the teams adopt polar-opposite strategies. Polly and Pete stay local, quickly uncovering high-end treasures like a pair of brand new Church’s boots for a bargain price and a vintage Next jacket. Meanwhile, Callum and Lola take a gamble by trekking to the furthest shop in town. Despite some first shop nerves from Callum, they manage to sniff out Joanna's pick of the day – a Manhattan portage bag – and a set of art deco glasses. The competition intensifies during the upcycling phase. Polly’s £6 pink eiderdown is transformed into a trendy, one-of-a-kind quilted jacket. Callum, spurred on by a bit of spite to outdo Polly, invests half his budget in a Stag Minstrel dressing table. Furniture artist Sarah Haugh gives it a modern, show-stopping makeover with bold stencilling. On auction day, the atmosphere is electric. Polly proves to be a natural at salesmanship, even getting Joanna to model her upcycled jacket to drive up bids. Callum struggles with a severe case of the shakes, but once he gains his confidence and starts sharing the history of his finds, the money begins to fly in. With the live auction totals and online sales combined, the final result is a travesty for one but a triumph for the other. In the end, the real winner is the charity, with an impressive amount raised through savvy scouting and creative restoration.

  25. 00:30 The Repair Shop Series 16: Episode 2 R [AD]

The team revive a powered football wheelchair and some unique handcrafted jewellery.

First to arrive at the barn is Bobby Williams from Surrey, bringing the powered wheelchair that opened up a whole new sporting career. Bobby had always loved sport as a kid, but competing on the football field with his non-disabled friends was tough. When he discovered powerchair football, it was a complete game-changer. Fast, physical and fiercely competitive, the sport gave him independence, confidence and a team of his own. For years, this chair has taken the full force of matches: spins, crashes and heavy impacts have left it battered, scratched and mechanically tired. Now stepping back from playing and moving into coaching, Bobby wants the chair restored so it can be passed on to a new young player, lending someone else the same life-changing opportunity he was given. It will take the expertise of Dom Chinea, with a little mechanical help from David Burville, to strip it back, rebuild its frame and refresh its electrics so that it can be ready once again for the rigours of the court. Next through the doors are brothers Pete and Eric McCready, carrying a fragile flag with an extraordinary romantic history. In 1951, their parents – just teenagers at the time and both avid speedway fans – attended a race night at White City Stadium in Glasgow, home of the Glasgow Tigers. Amid the roar of the engines and the smell of fuel, they met for the first time – a chance encounter that would shape the rest of their lives. Years later, when the stadium was threatened with demolition to make way for the M8 motorway, their father couldn’t bear to see a piece of that history destroyed. He famously shimmied up the flagpole and rescued the very flag that had flown above the referee’s box on the night he met his future wife. Now stained, torn and peppered with holes, the flag is in urgent need of conservation. Textile expert Rebecca Bissonnet must stabilise and clean the delicate fabric before mounting it for display in order for it to be returned to the Glasgow Tigers as both a tribute to a lost sporting venue and the remarkable love story that began beneath it. From Southend-on-Sea in Essex comes Debbie Lee, with two deeply personal pieces of jewellery: a charm necklace and bracelet handmade by her father from stainless steel cutlery. An engineer with a gift for invention, he painstakingly crafted pairs of miniature charms – including boots, guitars and crosses – in two sizes so that Debbie and her mother could wear matching sets. Over time, sadly, many of the charms have become detached, and some have been lost altogether. Now, master goldsmith Richard Talman faces the demanding task of recreating the missing pieces, not from the precious metal he is used to but in tough, unyielding steel – namely, Debbie’s late mother’s original cutlery. This gruelling task very nearly defeats Richard, and it takes every ounce of his grit and determination for the necklace and bracelet to once again be worn with pride as a testament to Debbie’s father’s ingenuity and skill. Lastly, Sarah Weir from Harrogate arrives with a battered but beloved bagatelle board that has brought her family together for generations. Originally owned by her great-uncle Dick, the game became a centrepiece of family life, particularly at Christmas, when the annual champion’s name would be added to the back. For Sarah’s mother, who was determined her adopted children would always feel they belonged, the ritual was simple: lunch, washing-up, then the bagatelle board. Even now, it continues to unite the family, including Sarah’s autistic grandson, who happily joins in when the game comes out. But decades of enthusiastic play have left the board warped, faded and structurally fragile. It’s a job for the many expert talents of David Burville, who must reinforce the frame, replace the missing pins and restore the playing surface – ensuring this noisy, competitive tradition can continue to echo through family gatherings for many years to come.

Friends Emma and Sophie thrift in Hebden Bridge for Dove House.

Joanna Page heads to the creative heart of Hebden Bridge – a former mill town famed for its independent spirit and as a filming location for the BBC TV series Happy Valley. Today’s competitors are friends Emma and Sophie, who first met on a fashion shoot for Dove House Hospice. Now they’re going head-to-head to raise as much money as possible for the charity that brought them together. Guiding them are expert vintage thrifters – and husbands – Tom and Terry. The teams quickly reveal very different shopping styles. Sophie and Tom dive straight into the nearest shop, where Sophie’s love of oversized menswear leads her to a vintage St Michael jacket – a nostalgic find with added appeal thanks to its 'Made in the UK' label. Emma and Terry take a steadier approach, carefully assessing a rare red rotary dial telephone before building a collection packed with retro charm. The hunt for Joanna’s pick of the day – an original 1970s Holly Hobbie doll – adds extra jeopardy. While Tom hesitates over the gamble, Sophie trusts her instinct and pushes to secure the collectable toy. As time slips away, Emma and Terry uncover a colourful 1960s picnic set and an eye-catching Murano-style glass duck that divides opinion but promises personality at auction. For the upcycling challenge, creativity takes centre stage. Emma selects a vintage rocking chair and plans to re-cover it using fabric from animal-illustrated curtains – a bold, characterful refresh. Sophie, however, leaves her upcycle decision perilously late, eventually opting for an unexpected sleeping bag with plans to transform it into a statement padded coat. The final minutes are frantic for Sophie and Tom, who scramble to spend the remainder of their budget. With Joanna urging them on, they squeeze in a last-second dash for additional vintage finds before they run out of time. At the live-streamed auction, both friends must swap browsing rails for the rostrum. Emma channels calm confidence, while Sophie leans into theatrical flair. With bids climbing and pride on the line, it’s a spirited showdown, but whatever the outcome, Dove House Hospice stands to benefit from a creative, chaotic and thoroughly entertaining day on Hebden Bridge's high street.

  20. 20:00 The Repair Shop Series 16: Episode 3

The team fix a historic football, a Cretan lyra and a magazine from a Japanese POW camp.

First to arrive in the barn are sisters Julie and Tracy from Gosport, with a well-travelled pachinko machine, originally bought by their father in 1970 when he was on naval duty in Japan. The family were living in Malaysia at the time, and this pinball-style gaming device became a much-loved treasure at the heart of many happy times. Naturally, the pachinko came with the family on their journey back to the UK, but to the sisters’ dismay, it has long since fallen silent. Once a symphony of flashing lights and joyously ringing ball bearings, it hasn’t worked for over 50 years, and it’s down to ‘Pinball’ Geoff Harvey to get the machine working again. Geoff approaches the task in his usual irrepressible style, but can he get this vintage beauty to light up and once again play the sounds that Julie and Tracy remember so well? Next in are brothers Iain and Kirk Russell from Glasgow, with a football made famous by their grandfather, Rangers legend Ian McMillan. This leather match ball was used in the historic Scottish Cup final replay between Rangers and fierce local rivals Celtic back in 1963, a game that Rangers won 3-0. As it was likely to be Ian’s last cup final before retiring, his teammate Jim Baxter decided to smuggle the ball off the pitch as a souvenir for Ian. However, failing to fully appreciate the romanticism of this gesture, the Scottish FA demanded the ball back, sparking a media frenzy which lasted until the SFA finally bowed to the pressure and returned the ball to Ian to commemorate his glittering career. Sadly, Ian’s young grandsons weren’t aware of the ball’s storied past, and used it in endless family kickabouts, leaving it deflated and damaged, with Ian’s handwritten signature now barely legible. Suzie Fletcher may not be a football aficionado, but her knowledge about leather is unbridled, and together with art conservator Lucia, a real team effort sees them breathe new life back into this precious piece of footballing history. Peter Moss and his son Alex arrive at the barn with a remarkable artefact that shone a little light during the dark days of the Second World War. Raggle Taggle is a unique magazine created by Peter’s father, Jock Moss, and his fellow prisoners of war while they were held captive by the Japanese in the notorious Shirakawa camp in modern-day Taiwan. As bookbinder Chris Shaw examines the fragile, mosquito-net covered volume, Jock’s descendants recount how he edited the handwritten and hand-illustrated magazine to lift prisoners’ spirits amid brutal conditions. With only one copy shared among 800 men, it became an antidote to despair, and Peter is desperately hoping Chris can restore this precious and historic book for future generations. Last to arrive is Emma MacLennan from Kent, with her late son Alex’s treasured Cretan lyra, a traditional bowed folk instrument at the heart of the Greek island’s celebrations and traditions. Alex, whose grandmother was from Crete, immersed himself in the island’s culture from childhood, learning the dialect, attending the local festivals, sheep shearing with the local shepherds, and, above all, teaching himself how to play the lyra. Alex treasured the instrument, playing it with passion and no little skill, until motor neurone disease ended his ability to perform. Tragically, Alex passed away at the age of just 31, and the lyra that he left behind holds huge emotional significance for his family. Now, luthier Becky Houghton has the daunting task of restoring the voice to this beautiful but broken piece of family history.

  21. 21:00 MasterChef Series 22: Episode 2

Six more amateurs work to secure a quarter-final place in the second heat of the week.

It's the second heat of the week, and six more amateurs are about to be put through their paces by Grace and Anna. It’s not often you get a tattoo artist, a flight operations controller and a retired US diplomat under one roof, but each one of the six cooks competing has the same goal – to impress the judges and secure their place in this week’s quarter-final. First up, they need to earn an exclusive MasterChef apron. To work out which of them might have MasterChef potential, Anna and Grace need them to serve up their best plate in the signature dish round. A dish that demonstrates skill, a great palate and presentation skills to boot is a tall order under this kind of pressure, but the judges need to be sure that the amateurs will cope with what lies ahead. There’s no shortage of creativity, as the dishes include a Moroccan spiced risotto, a Persian love cake and a baked doughnut. Having tasted them all, Grace and Anna pick two cooks to whizz into the next round, proudly sporting their new aprons. The other four must dust themselves off and get set for battle once more as they take on the classic recipe test. In a quest to see what core skills these cooks really have, Anna and Grace want them to prepare a hearty chicken breast served with creamy mash and a red wine sauce. The contestants each have the recipe and necessary ingredients but must rely on their knowledge and instinct. The only timing they can be certain of is that they have just 45 minutes to pull this dish out of the bag. It’s then down to the judges to pick the best and break the news to the two cooks who will be heading home. The four cooks sporting aprons come together for the final cook-off of the heat. This time around, the pressure is ramped up, as they have three extra mouths to feed. With cookbook authors and restaurant owners in the room, if this doesn’t inspire the amateurs to cook at their best, nothing will. All that’s left is for Anna and Grace to decide which two chefs have done enough to earn a place in this week’s quarter-final. One more will be sent home, but the race to become MasterChef Champion 2026 is well and truly underway.

In this episode, a case that had lain dormant for 30 years is revitalised when a new forensic investigator examines the evidence. Glasgow woman Mary McLaughlin was found strangled to death at her West End flat in 1984. Without witnesses or other crucial leads, the case remained cold until 2014, when forensic biologist and DNA specialist Joanne Cochrane was asked to re-examine Mary’s clothing. Mary’s daughter Gina McGavin recalls the terrible impact her mother’s murder had on the family and the relief that the killer was finally caught. In our second case, police made a gruesome discovery in east London in the summer of 2022 – a young female student’s body had been placed in a suitcase and dumped on a quiet roadside. A thrifting showdown in Aberystwyth as mother and son face off to raise money for charity.

Joanna Page heads west to the seaside town of Aberystwyth, famous for its Victorian pier and unpredictable weather. Battling the rain are mother-and-son duo Margaret and Endaf, both hoping their shared love of a bargain will translate into serious profit for charity. With £100 each and just 60 minutes on the clock, they’re paired with expert thrifters and sent racing around Aberystwyth’s charity shops. Endaf starts strongly, snapping up a quality blazer for under a tenner before confidently adding crystal glasses and rare Babycham glasses to his haul. He later spots a vintage wool-and-cashmere jacket, Joanna’s pick of the day, and takes a chance on a violin, proving he is willing to think outside the box. Margaret, meanwhile, wastes no time securing her upcycle item – a nest of dark wood tables bought for just £3. She also picks up Dutch wooden clogs, a vintage leather messenger bag and gambles on an expensive suede jacket, carefully selecting items she believes have strong resale appeal. The contest has a warm but competitive family dynamic, with playful rivalry building between mum and son as the clock ticks down. At the transformation stage, Endaf’s plain 80s leather jacket is dramatically reworked with fabric paint and new gold hardware by upcycle entrepreneur Emma Deeks, turning it into a bold statement piece. Margaret’s modest £3 tables are transformed by using a poured-paint technique, creating a colourful, marbled finish that completely reinvents them. Then comes the live-streamed auction. Endaf grows in confidence as he pitches his items, using detail and humour to drive bids higher, especially on the vintage Burton jacket and his upcycled leather piece. Margaret charms viewers with her warmth and storytelling, successfully selling her clogs and making a strong profit on her upcycled tables. When the totals are combined with their online sales, who will win between mother and son? The real triumph is for their chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation, with an impressive amount raised in total. Rain-soaked, good-humoured and full of personality, this contest is a heartwarming family face-off that proves thrifting talent might just run in the family.

  20. 20:00 Race Across the World Series 6: Episode 4

The race intensifies as the teams journey to Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital.

BBC One’s much-loved, Bafta-winning series Race Across the World returns to BBC One and BBC iPlayer for its sixth series. Five teams embark on a 12,000km journey across southern Europe and Central Asia, navigating seven checkpoints on their way to Hatgal in remote northern Mongolia. With no phones or internet access, and armed only with the equivalent of the airfare to fly the route, they must rely on ingenuity, resilience and the kindness of strangers to reach the finish line first. As the fourth leg begins, just four teams remain, and the leader board is tighter than ever. The route continues east towards the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlements. Where winding old streets, steaming bath houses and faded art nouveau facades sit alongside bold modern architecture that has emerged since the end of Soviet rule as the city redefined itself for a new era. Leaving Halfeti behind, the teams face a pivotal decision – head north towards the Black Sea coast or strike east through Türkiye’s arid heartland. Moving beyond the relative familiarity of the west, they enter a region home to just 12% of the population, where Kurdish, Armenian and Assyrian influences still shape daily life. The routes converge at the Georgian border, as vast Turkish plains give way to tight gorges and snow-capped mountains. The elimination may be over, but the competition is fiercer than ever. With the race leaders’ advantage slashed to less than ten hours, the chasing teams sense an opportunity to strike. For one pair, surviving elimination came at a heavy financial cost. With their budget decimated, they focus on hard graft to balance their finances. Two pairs leave the checkpoint neck-and-neck, but while both are focused on the race, competition is fierce, and one duo is keeping their plans firmly under wraps. Only one team chooses to head north, seeking out their first homestay of the race and embarking on an uncomfortable 14-hour overnight bus ride that could give them a crucial advantage. Meanwhile, the remaining three teams push east, facing tricky bus connections that force another pair to reroute in order to stay in contention. Crossing into their fourth country, the journey takes its toll on one competitor, forcing their progress to a temporary halt and leaving their teammate to explore alone. The leg culminates in a dramatic foot race across the Mtkvari River and through the cobbled streets of Tbilisi’s Old Town to the fourth checkpoint, where it will be revealed if anyone has done enough to take the lead.

  21. 21:00 MasterChef Series 22: Episode 3

The week’s six most talented amateurs face off against each other for the first time.

It's the first quarter-final, where this week’s six most talented amateurs gather to face off against each other for the first time. It’s now all to play for, as just two challenges stand between them and a place in knockout week. It’s time to up the ante and deliver some knockout-worthy food. Grace and Anna are kicking things off with an invention test, one of MasterChef’s most feared challenges, and they would like all six contestants to make a dish centred around pancakes. Whether they pick soufflé pancakes from Japan, crepes from France, or classic fluffy American pancakes, the world is their oyster. To aid the amateurs in this endeavour, the MasterChef market is back open for business with a real treasure trove of fresh produce, including meat, fish, fruit, nuts and seasonings that could take their dish to the next level. The cooks have ten minutes to prepare and a generous 70 minutes to cook, before the judges pick their perfect pancake from the plates provided. The quarter-final ends with the toughest task yet – the critic's brief. Renowned critic, broadcaster and author Jay Rayner has set the next task, and all he’s asking for is a salad! Sounds simple, but he’s not after a limp bowl of lettuce with chopped tomatoes. This salad must be MasterChef worthy and needs structure, texture, a killer dressing, and enough technique and flavour to dazzle all three judges. Taking Jay’s feedback on board, the judges will pick their favourite three cooks of the night who will live to fight another day and storm into knockout week. They might think the competition is tough already, but just wait to see what Anna and Grace have in store!

Paul, Bob and Ted travel to one of the UK’s most northerly chalk streams, Driffield Beck at Mulberry Whin in East Riding of Yorkshire. Romesh travels to Rwanda to discover its unique culture and incredible wildlife.

Romesh crosses the border from Uganda into Rwanda, a country he feels has been defined by westerners almost entirely by the 1994 genocide. More recently, the British government announced plans to send refugees seeking asylum in the UK to Rwanda. Rom’s affable guide is performance artist, genocide survivor and peace activist Hippo, who initiates him the cultural significance of sharing milk, puts him to work helping to maintain the pristine streets of the capital, Kigali, and shows him where Rwanda plans to house asylum seekers sent from Britain. Leaving the busy capital behind, they venture east to a village where they try to create indigenous art. In Akagera, the country's largest national park, they encounter incredible wildlife, including giraffes, impala and lions. After trying to take on the women's national cycling team, the pair head to the National Genocide Memorial Museum to learn more about what happened in 1994. Romesh is blown away by Rwanda’s unique culture and welcoming people but troubled by reports of alleged human rights abuses, including suppression of dissent and invasive surveillance methods. He and Hippo end their Rwandan adventure via a magical encounter with a family of wild gorillas.
